Synopsis:
Keller, a painter, while at the ballet is impressed with the beauty of Nicole and sketches her head on the body of a nude model. When it is shown, it causes embarrassment to Nicole’s husband, Walter, a diplomat whose career is threatened. Nicole decides to get a divorce to ease things. She sees Keller, who tries to make amends for the trouble he has caused. Nicole resumes her singing career in nightclubs, and Keller agrees to help her get a divorce.

The film can be best described as Käutner goes Antonioni with Fellini’s cinematographer on the camera. The critics slaughtered the film as they did with many films of the era which only get rediscovered today and it didn’t help that the author attacked during a press conference the film which he had himself written following his own novel unwisely too closely while Käutner fought against that. Don’t let that disturb you, it’s quite a remarkable film and a great showcase for the cool understated beauty of Ruth Leuwerik who was correctly labeled the German Deborah Kerr.

The story tells of Franziska who leaves her arrogant husband and drifts lonely to Venice where she meets some men among them a NS criminal who is threatened with assassination by another acquaintance of Franziska, so murder looms in the air
