Sometime in the mid to late sixties, Doris Day got saddled with the “Oldest Living Virgin” label, something which seemed somewhat a propos considering her squeaky clean, almost asexual screen persona. Day was always the girl next door, even when she traversed in unusual territory like Julie or the 1956 Hitchcock remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much. With her slightly raspy voice and inherently sweet disposition, Day was the Eisenhower Era’s answer to Marilyn Monroe, another stunningly beautiful blonde that you wouldn’t be worried about bringing home to meet Mom. Day excelled at these fluffy comedy films, and the fact is she is sexy in them, in her own down home, unpretentious way. Day probably had no finer showcase in this genre than the film that rather improbably brought her her only Oscar nomination for Best Actress, the fondly remembered 1959 Ross Hunter quasi-farce Pillow Talk. Day had begun her film career in some middling musicals which hoped to capitalize on her immense popularity as a vocalist, but by the mid-fifties she had started stretching out, at least a little, including in what might arguably called her finest performance (and one perhaps more deserving of Academy recognition than Pillow Talk), that of Ruth Etting in the biopic Love Me or Leave Me (which did receive an Oscar nomination for Day’s frequent Columbia records music director, Percy Faith, who arranged the music for the film). But the late fifties saw Day shift almost exclusively to breezy comedy fare, and it seemed to suit her to a tee, at least based upon the then stellar box office receipts of Pillow Talk, a film which became something of a pop cultural sensation when it was released in 1959.

Darling Lili is a 1970 American musical film.

Set during World War I, it centers on Lili Smith, a popular British music hall performer who is regarded as a femme fatale. She’s actually a German spy, and the uncle she dotes upon is really Col. Kurt Von Ruger, a fellow espionage agent and her contact for the Huns. In hopes of gaining valuable information, Lili begins using her feminine wiles on Maj. William Larrabee, a top American pilot. However, Lili soon discovers that she’s falling in love with Larrabee and can’t find the courage to betray him, and when Larrabee discovers Lili’s secret, he refuses to turn her in.

The screenplay was written by William Peter Blatty and Blake Edwards, who also directed. The cast included Julie Andrews as Lili, Rock Hudson as Larabee, and Jeremy Kemp as Von Ruger.

The original score was composed by Henry Mancini, and he and Johnny Mercer wrote the title tune. Actual songs from the era performed in the film include “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary,” “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile Smile,” “Keep the Home Fires Burning,” and “Mademoiselle from Armentieres.”

The song “Whistling Away the Dark” (music by Henry Mancini, words by Johnny Mercer) was nominated for an Academy Award for best song, of which Julie Andrews gave an unforgettable and moving performance at the beginning of the film.

The movie had two other nominations, in costume design (Donald Brooks and Jack Bear) and best original song score (by Henry Mancini), but failed to win an Oscar.

Edwards suffered continuous interference from Paramount Pictures executives while making the film, and it was eventually edited by the studio largely without his input. The director later satirized the problems he encountered making the film in S.O.B..

The film was horribly managed by Paramount executives and barely got a release in most of the United States. Despite breaking and setting box-office records at Radio City Music Hall, the film was a critical and commercial failure. Budgeted at $25 million, it grossed only $5 million in the US, and later earned $3.3 million in videotape rentals.

Plot Synopsis

The popular radio detective series The Fat Man was brought to the screen in 1951, with the series’ original star J. Scott Smart retained in the title role. Smart plays porcine sleuth Brad Runyon, who tackles the mystery surrounding the murder of a Los Angeles dentist. With the assistance of general factotum Bill Norton (Clinton Sundberg), Runyon follows the trail of clues all the way to a three-ring circus. Famed Barnum & Bailey clown Emmett Kelly makes his screen debut as one of the suspects; others essential to the action are such up-and-comers as Rock Hudson, Julie London and Jayne Meadows. The film’s flashback-within-flashback structure helps to enliven its more verbose passages. For the most part, The Fat Man plays more like a radio show than a movie–at least until the exciting climax, inventively staged by director William Castle.

Twenty five years after the death of Rock Hudson, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, biographers and movie historians discuss his career, his personal life and his death, all especially in relation to his closeted homosexuality. Born Roy Fitzgerald, Hudson treated who was known as “Rock Hudson” as being a studio creation that was somewhat outside himself. However, he sometimes was still “Rock Hudson: movie star” to those who knew him. Publicly, he had to maintain the façade of that creation, the public who saw in him a handsome, rugged, masculine yet likable and safe leading man and movie star. That façade included a short two-year marriage of convenience to Phyllis Gates. His movie career on the most part also supported that façade, especially when there was a foil of a more effeminate or nebbish male character playing against him. His life changed when he was diagnosed with AIDS – the disease which would eventually take his life – at a time when little was known about it beyond it afflicting most specifically homosexual males and it being a probable death sentence. Although it ravaged him physically and emotionally – the latter in some respects due to his homosexual orientation becoming common public knowledge – it also opened up the discussion about the disease within the public consciousness since he became the first true public face of the disease.
