An ultra-rare two-part documentary made for French TV about Georges Perec, directed by his former partner Catherine Binet (who is mostly known for her only feature film, The Games of Countess Dolingen of Gratz). It features a mixture of archival footage, scenes from Perec’s films and to-camera readings of excerpts from his work by various actors and friends of the author (Michael Lonsdale, Marina Vlady, Alain Cuny, Sami Frey, Edith Scob, Harry Mathews and others). Some consider this to be the best documentary about the author that has been made so far.

Il s’agit de deux films-portraits sur Georges Perec : Te souviens-tu de Gaspard Winckler ? en sera la première partie ; Vous souvenez-vous de Gaspard Winckler ?, la deuxième.

Malgré les angoisses nourries par l’agression des « ayants droit » et la frustration exacerbée par les refus successifs d’éventuels producteurs de reprendre la mise en chantier d’Herculine Barbin, Catherine est comprise par un homme de coeur : Claude Guisard, qui lui donne carte blanche, à la télévision, pour réaliser ces oeuvres « magnifiques », « rares à tous les sens du terme », ainsi qu’il le dira en les présentant en projection privée.

Pour ce chef-d’oeuvre de dissection de textes, nous sommes douze comédiens, tous amis intimes de l’auteur : Alain Cuny, Richard Bohringer, Pierre Hossein, Sami Frey, Claude Piéplu, Daniel Emilfork, Jean-Pierre Sentier, Michael Lonsdale, Édith Scob, Sabine Haudepin, André Marcon et moi-même.

Le tournage se passe dans le bonheur du travail bien fait. Chacun apporte son style à la lecture des bribes choisies par une Catherine très stricte, très directive quant à l’exactitude des mots, des silences, des reprises sur les mouvements de caméra, laquelle s’approche quelquefois en si gros plan qu’on ne voit à I’écran que les yeux de l’interprète. Derrière nous, un aquarium où des poissons bizarres, de mini-monstres marins, évoluent, soulignant par leurs volte-face tantôt gracieuses, tantôt violentes le sens et le style du texte.

Pour d’aucuns, c’est l’humour qui prévaut. Claude Piéplu y excelle ! Lonsdale, l’air de rien, distille sa tendresse jusqu’aux larmes. Sami Frey y prend un tel plaisir qu’il montera par Ia suite tout un spectacle sur Je me souviens. Je retrouve Jean-Pierre Sentier, poète lunaire au physique étonnant. Édith Scob, une tendre amie, dont la diction souligne à merveille les bizarreries qui émaillent les phrases choisies. Alain Cuny, comme il se doit, culmine par sa présence et sa voix tonitruante. Rien ne peut faire plus plaisir à Catherine que de dompter cet animal de scène et d’en faire un lecteur attentif et assagi, jusqu’au moment où sa fougue se libère…

Nous sommes tous conscients de participer à une oeuvre d’un foisonnement, d’une drôlerie, d’une tristesse, d’une profondeur, d’un culot, d’une délicatesse, d’un érotisme incroyables, et, en même temps, d’une rare pureté.

Comme pour son premier film, la critique fut particulièrement élogieuse… Mais que vaut le succès de cinquante-deux minutes de diffusion, tard dans la soirée, entre deux pubs de yoghourts aux effets laxatifs et un journal télévisé annonciateur de désastres planétaires ?

Dans le subconscient de quelques milliers de téléspectateurs, n’en reste que la trace infime d’une tendresse humaine, d’un goût du beau et de I’étrange.
