After the Civil War four brothers who fought for the South head west. Yanks are building the Santa Fe Railroad and one of the brothers joins them. The other three still hold their hatred of the North and join up with those trying to stop the railroad’s completion. The one brother unsuccessfully tries to keep the other brothers out of trouble but eventually has to join the posse that is after them.

Ride the High Country is the one Sam Peckinpah movie about which there has never been controversy–save at MGM in 1962, when a new studio regime opted to dump this beautiful, heartbreakingly elegiac Western into the bottom half of a double-bill. Westerns rarely even got reviewed back then, so it’s wellnigh miraculous that critics discovered the movie and raved about it. Newsweek called it the best American picture of the year.
Veteran cowboy stars Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea portray aging gunslingers in the twilight of the Old West. McCrea’s character, Steve Judd, signs on to transport a shipment of gold from a remote mining camp. Gil Westrum (Scott), an old crony now trick-shooting in a carnival, agrees to help but really aims to seduce Judd into stealing the treasure. The slow-building tension between longtime friends–one still true to the code he’s lived by, the other having drifted away from it–anticipates the tortuous personal dilemmas played out to the death by Peckinpah’s Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Benny and Elita in Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.

The action scenes are powerful, if only beginning to suggest the radical technique with which Peckinpah would astonish audiences in just a few years. But his feeling for flavorsome dialogue, Rabelaisian humor, and full-blooded character acting is already unmistakable. Warren Oates, L.Q. Jones, and John Davis Chandler are among the “redneck peckerwoods” complicating the journey, and Mariette Hartley is fresh and saucy in her big-screen debut. As for McCrea and Scott, they are simply superb. The two proposed that they swap roles before filming got underway, and the question of who got first billing was settled by flipping a coin. Both men retired once the film was in the can. They knew they’d never top it. –Richard T. Jameson

This film is a hard one to assess. It is like a Western taken out of context, replacing the cowboys and Indians with coal miners and steel impresarios.

Ostensibly two coal miners, Pittsburgh Markham and Cash Evans, best friends, chance upon Josie “Hunky” Winters a high-class “countess” and both men fall in love with her. She persuades them that they need to take chances if they are to get anywhere and they do, by shaving three cents off the price of coke and persuading a steel company owner, Morgan Prentiss to sign a contract with them to provide it.

In doing so, they become millionaires but Pittsburgh’s will to succeed has him leaving Hunky behind and marrying Prentiss’s daughter so he can further his ambitions. These actions divorce him from both his family and friends and tear him from his roots and push him into a society that makes him uncomfortable. However, he comes to his senses in time to fulfil the promises he made to his workforce, to improve plant productivity and to help win World War II.

This is an unashamed propaganda film to inspire workers to work harder in order to help the War effort. The story is predictable and dated and it is hard to ignore the message that is driven home: that the greater good (ie the war effort) is more important than individual wealth and petty entanglements.

I can’t say I’ve ever been a John Wayne fan but he puts in a solid performance and it is refreshing to see him playing the bounder for a change. Randolph Scott can always be relied upon to give good support and he doesn’t disappoint in this movie. And what can one say about Marlene? She is undoubtedly striking but the romantic plot is so underdeveloped that it is almost an incidental subplot. That is a shame because she illuminates every film she is in, just with her presence on set. As John Wayne himself put it she was and is “the most intriguing woman I’ve ever known.”

This film is worth seeing for curiosity value more than anything else and also for the cinematography which depicts the hard life of the coal miner particularly well. It is well-made and as long as you see it for what it is – an attempt to get the nation firmly behind the war effort – then it is a diverting yarn.

After being forced to shoot a friend in a duel, fast-gun Randolph Scott swears to take off his gunbelt forever but finds himself drawn to the middle of a range war when he’s blamed for the murder of his best friend. Now Scott must prove to the dead man’s kid brother (John Miles) that he’s innocent. Naturally, Scott is forced to strap on guns once more to bring an end to the tyranny of local land baron Griff Barnett, his devious foreman Bruce Cabot, hired gunslinger Forrest Tucker (in a really underwritten, wasted role) and mean, crooked deputy Grant Withers. To complicate matters, Scott becomes involved with the land baron’s two daughters, nice girl Dorothy Hart and conniving Barbara Britton who is in love with Cabot. Alan Le May’s script from Zane Grey’s TWIN SOMBREROS seems to need a bit more “polish”, but Scott is terrific as always, plus the gorgeous Sedona locations (abetted by Vasquez Rocks, Jauregui Ranch and Monogram Ranch) in Cinecolor are enough to recommend this one.

Despite being a fairly routine oater, Gunfighters was a key film in the development of the B-western. It’s success led producer Harry Joe Brown and star Randolph Scott to team up for a further 16 films, culminating in the legendary “Ranown” cycle with Budd Boetticher.
