Banned for over 20 years by the Russian authorities for its controversial stance on anti-Semitism and women’s rights, THE COMMISSAR was finally screened at the Berlin Film Festival in 1988, where it won the Silver Bear and met with international acclaim.

Set in 1920 during the Russian Civil War, the film follows the story of Clavdia Vavilova, a female Commissar from the Red Army who is sent to stay with a poor Jewish family in the final stages of her pregnancy. The initial hostility and resentment of both parties begins to mellow as they gradually discover that they have more in common than either realised. But following the birth of a son, Clavdia is faced with leaving her newborn behind and returning to the grave realities of war. Now recognised as a classic of Russian cinema, ‘The Commissar’ is presented in a digitally restored version, together with a fascinating array of extra features that tell the story of the film’s troubled journey to the screen.

Young scientist Vladimir Bantikov (Nikolai Fyodortsov) from the Institute for Intractable Problems is working on a rainbow formula. In order not to be distracted by numerous unnecessary and boring meetings, he creates his twin – the robot Yashu.

Talented scientist Vladimir Bantikov is engaged in innovative research, wishing to deduce a formula for creating a rainbow. To avoid being distracted by boring and routine duties at the Institute of Insoluble Problems, the scientist creates an android named Yasha – his doppelganger.

After some time the robot, gaining experience and courage in dealing with people, escapes from his creator. Bantikov actively tries to get on Yasha’s trail, but the search is complicated by the robot’s ability to change its own appearance. Possessing flawless logic and human-like traits, Yasha is impassive, unable to show compassion and has no sense of humour. These characteristics give Vladimir hope for a quick search for the fugitive, but very soon he becomes convinced that similar qualities are inherent in many people.
