A film not particularly well-liked by critics, Recours en grâce has genuinely potent points of interest, especially the ease with which Mario’s wartime buddies switch into the “clandestine activities” mode, promptly transporting Paris back to the time of the Occupation, and the chilling ending that cleverly reimagines “the greatest horror of all” bit from Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock.

Plot
Summer 1953. Determined to go to Liguria with her little daughter Caterina for a short vacation, Anna Maria Mentorsi (who is in fact a prostitute), on the train that leads to the Riviera, is convinced by a nice gentleman (who later turns out to be the mayor of Pontorno) to not get off at Terrazzi, as she was going to do at first, but to stay indeed in the town of Pontorno.
Believed to be a respectable widow, she’s at first accepted by the good society, by the other guests of the Hotel Palace and its beach-goers, but when turns out her job, the void is created around her.
The mayor Silvio tries to help, but has not enough power to counter the hypocrisy and respectability.
The only solution for Anna Maria seems to be linked to the local billionaire Chiastrino, envied and flattered by all.

After being adopted by her aunt, Thérèse Raquin was forced into marrying her sickly cousin Camille at an early age. One day, Camille gets himself drunk and has to be carried home by Laurent, an Italian lorry driver. The instant that Thérèse sees Laurent she is attracted to him. He is everything a man should be, not the mean sickly creature she is married to. Laurent is equally drawn to Thérèse and the two embark on a clandestine love affair. When he realises his wife’s infidelity, Camille decides to take her to Paris, to place her with relatives who will cure her of her wanton nature. On the train to Paris, Thérèse is met by Laurent, who urges her to elope with him. In the course of a violent confrontation, Laurent throws Camille out of the train. For a while, it looks as if the police have accepted Thérèse’s story that her husband’s death was an accident. Then she receives an unexpected visit from a man who claims to have witnessed Camille’s last few moments…
