In the nineties the Yugoslavia Federation falls apart in bloody wars. Perpetual student Milan, a Serb from a patriarchal community and Kenan, a Muslim cellist, are a homosexual couple living in Sarajevo. Their lives, intimate and public, are shaken up by the aggression in Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose devastating consequences unfold in inter-ethnic hatred. Trapped in Sarajevo during the siege of the Serb forces, the lovers manage to flee to Milan’s home village and there they take shelter, waiting for Milan’s father, Ljubo, to find a way to the Netherlands. Witnessing the brutality of Serb forces and their hatred towards Muslims, Milan desperately improvises: he disguises Kenan as a woman and begins to present him as his wife, Milena, a secret discovered by Milan’s best friend, Lunja. Milan is drafted into the army and the situation becomes almost unbearable for Kenan. His one companion, is Ranka, a waitress in a local café, a woman whose dark secrets terrify most of the villagers around her…

Krsto Papic – Predstava ‘Hamleta’ u Mrdusi Donjoj AKA Acting Hamlet in the Village of Mrdusa Donja (1974)

Plot:
In the village Mrduša Donja in Dalmatian Zagora, the position of the president of the working community was grabbed by Mate, who also stole some money and put the blame on a war veteran. But Joco, the veteran’s son, wants to find out the truth. In order to celebrate the anniversary of his election, Mate orders the villagers to organize the play ‘Hamlet’ with himself playing the king. The professor simplifies the text for the villagers, while the role of Hamlet goes to Joco…

The humor shines in the first half where the local professor is anguished by trying to “adapt Shakespeare to the Balkan way”, i.e. making it simple enough for the villagers to understand it. That way Hamlet and Ophelia became Amlet and Omelia, and among the “improved” monologues is also this one: “Look at Polonius over there, how he wants to ride an ox all by himself! The king would always like a seat, because it always licks his bare ass!” In English it doesn’t sound so funny, but since it rhymes in Croatian, it’s a riot. Too bad Papić didn’t more passionately embrace such a hilarious subplot that makes a caricature of Hamlet, but the parallels between the play and the relationships of the characters are good, while the ending, although too bitter, is wonderfully nihilistic: such a subversive critique of politicians who celebrate, devour and dance, is equal to a classic…

Won Golden Arena, Pula Film Festival of Yugoslavian Films: Best Actor.

synopsis
The film follows the events of the 1972 outbreak of smallpox in Yugoslavia, and the subsequent quarantine at Belgrade’s General Hospital. The film opens with a Kosovar pilgrim from Belgrade in the Middle East. He is in a bazaar, and buys a flute from a man who is visibly ill. Upon his return to Belgrade he becomes ill and is transported to the city’s General Hospital. His disease is initially misdiagnosed, and the smallpox virus (variola vera) quickly spreads through the hospital. Once the disease is correctly identified, the authorities attempt to control the outbreak by declaring martial law, enforcing quarantine, and enlisting the help of the World Health Organisation.

— The hospital scenes were filmed at several Belgrade hospitals, including City Hospital, which was the epicentre of the outbreak.
— Mainly filmed at Belgrade’s Clinic for Plastic Surgery and Burns (near the Partizan Stadium).
— The actor who was due to play the role of hospital administrator Čole quit with no notice the day before filming was to begin, so the film’s director asked his father, himself an established actor, to step in at no notice to take the role.
— In 2016 the Yugoslav Film Archive included the film in its list of Top 100 Serbian Films (1911-1999), and the film was adjudged a cultural heritage of great importance.
— In the 1983 edition of the annual poll conducted by the newspaper Oslobođenje, 30 Yugoslav critics and journalists named Variola Vera the best Yugoslav Film of 1982.

Primo Levi’s modern day odyssey from the concentration camp to his home in Italy. The Truce is a film about homecoming.

The horror and the suffering of the concentration camps has been well documented. What interested the director, Francesco Rosi, was to bring to the screen what Levi succeeded in doing so extraordinarily well in his book: recounting, through the tales of his remarkable adventures, the process of reawakening, of coming back to life, and of the re-acquisition of hope, through the experience of daily events, small and large, natural and joyous, the cumulative effect of which is to constantly affirm the superiority of love over death.

Funeral Feast, the film with the unforgettable masterfully-edited seven-minute shoot-out in the Tivoli park, takes place in the spring of 1941, when the war engulfs the lives of the Ljubljana youth as well. The affairs of the heart result in a liaison with an enemy officer, while the rebellion leads to organized resistance.

Like in the majority of Slovenian films, in Funeral Feast the actors from the other former Yugoslav republics were overdubbed by Slovenian actors: Boris Juh lent his voice to Rade Šerbedžija, Mojca Ribič to Snežana Nikšić, and Štefka Drolc to Milena Dravić.

At the 16th Festival of Yugoslav Film (Pula 1969), Matjaž Klopčič’s Funeral Feast received a special acknowledgement for “original direction”. Two other awards were given at the time: to Živojin Pavlović’s film The Ambush for “brave direction”, and to Želimir Žilnik’s feature Early Works for “personal direction”.

Trials and tribulations of a Croatian Communist intellectual in the turbulent years before, during and after WW2.

Evening Bells (Croatian: Večernja zvona) is a 1986 Yugoslav film directed by Lordan Zafranović. It is based on Vrata od utrobe, a novel by Mirko Kovač.

Screenwriter Mirko Kovac adapted his novel about the self-aggrandizing Tomislav (Rade Serbedzija. Starting with Tomislav’s childhood, when he plays practical jokes on the nuns at his elite school, or spies on his brother and his wife in their bedroom, he is already offensive and secretive. These traits continue when he grows up and starts an affair with his brother’s wife, and marries someone else in spite of that affair. He ends up tormenting the woman he marries through a misunderstanding, though he survives World War II thanks to her efforts. After the war he goes into politics and continues in much the same vein as in his private life. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
