In Southern Tunisia, Mattéo, a local who lives off the generosity of his listeners as he spends his time telling stories in the streets of Sfax, falls in love with a prostitute, Safia. She gives up her profession and they move, Matteo working at the port, in a house on the edge of the desert in which Mattéo’s father (the Maltese) live. But Safia being pregnant, Mattéo gets involved with a gang of gun smugglers, hoping to earn more money to provide for his family. But Matteo doesn’t come back and Safia belives him dead. Matteo’s father kicks her out of the house and she meets André, an archeologist who falls under her spell and she accepts to follow him to Paris. Three years later, out of jail, Matteo goes to Paris, hoping to find his beloved Safia and their child.

When 11 young Parisian women mysteriously disappear, the police recruit Adrienne Charpentier, the friend of the latest victim, to investigate. In answering a number of ads herself, Adrienne meets some suspicious individuals, but they all turn out to be innocent. Then she meets a cabaret performer, Robert Fleury, who instantly falls in love with her. Jean Renoir’s film about the French Revolution has the scope and pace of a historical epic, but its retelling of events is livened up by the care Renoir takes in presenting the people who took part in them. Amidst its grand story and shifting perspectives, this movie finds time for plenty of intimate moments – of heartbreak, of fear, of celebration and camaraderie – making it a fascinating micro portrait of a point in history that might be more commonly understood on the macro level, with a particularly affecting focus on class (exhibited as early as the opening credits, where the characters are organized based on the social class they belong to). The film does a terrific job of illustrating how ordinary people live and work together. It also illustrates the humanity of a historical figure like King Louis XVI, whose complexities might be lost in a drier and more fact-based historical telling. Essentially, it’s history from the ground up.

But that was before Dr. Parpalaid retired and was replaced by a charlatan by the name of Knock. A real genius this one, for he soon managed to persuade everyone that they were ill.
