Claes Fellbom’s Skottet [The Shot] is about two young people fleeing from the police through a wintry Sweden. 18-year-old Ronny (Peter Schildt) has been expelled from his parents’ house and family business since it was discovered that he had abused heroin. When he meets “Kompis” [“Friend”] (Kent-Arne Dahlgren) who has just escaped from prison, Ronny is quickly drawn into old bad habits. The film begins with an almost mute sequence where the two guys break into a weapons depot and drive out into the woods to “test” the automatic weapons in a dreadful war game, which ends in horror. Ronny is forced to seek refuge with his girlfriend Len (singer Cia Löwgren) and with the police on his heels, the young couple escapes.

[As being] Fellbom’s most personal feature film [Skottet] is undeservedly forgotten. In color and widescreen, the film depicts juvenile delinquency, abuse and generation gaps, with protagonists calling for our sympathies despite breaking the law, while the film strives for an authentic image of the police force; real police officers took part in the filming, as a way of correcting the often incorrect images of police investigations spread through feature films. Style and theme can be compared to a number of other sixties films, from Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde (1967) to Stefan Jarl’s and Jan Lindqvist’s acclaimed documentaries Dom kallar oss mods (1968) and Jan Haldoff’s En dröm om frihet (1969) which was released at almost the same time.

Scenes where moving camera work and music build moods create an experimental feel, and the film breaks with thriller conventions through its comparatively long episodes with a focus on everyday details. The cops are not heroes, but anonymous little dry old men, and the main characters are neither demonized nor glamorized; rather, they seem to get smaller and younger during the journey to finally appear as two children, chased by a huge police force.

Flushed with the success of his Elvira Madigan, Swedish director Bo Widerberg concocted another story of teenaged love juxtaposed with social upheaval in Adalen 31. The title refers to the 1931 worker’s strike against the Adalen paper mill in Northern Sweden. As the strikers debate whether or not to use violence in pressing their complaint, the daughter of the factory owner (Marie De Geer) is impregnated by the son of a worker (Peter Schildt). The strike is “resolved” in a bloody confrontation between the laborers and government troops, resulting in the death of the boy–and, on a greater scale, the collapse of Sweden’s Conservative Government. The girl ultimately opts for an abortion, which partially explains why Adalen 31 was originally given an “X” rating by the then-conservative Motion Picture Association of America.
