David Lean - Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Lawrence, a lieutenant in the British Army, is asked by Colonel Brighton to moderately assess Faisal, their ally. Lawrence is impressed with Faisal and seeks his help to plan an attack on the enemy.

Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote:
David Lean’s 1962 spectacle about T.E. Lawrence’s military career between 1916 and ’18, written by Robert Bolt and produced by Sam Spiegel, remains one of the most intelligent, handsome, and influential of all war epics. Combining the scenic splendor of De Mille with virtues of the English theater, Lean endeared himself to English professors and action buffs alike. The film won seven Oscars, including best picture and direction, yet the ideological crassness of De Mille and most war movies isn’t so much transcended as given a high gloss: the film’s subject is basically the White Man’s Burden—despite ironic notations—with Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, and Omar Sharif called upon to represent the Arab soul, and Jose Ferrer embodying the savage Turks. The all-male cast helps make this one of the most homoerotic of all screen epics, though the characters’ sexual experiences are at best only hinted at.

Unashamedly nostalgic, and almost autobiographical, ‘My Favorite Year’ has a standout performance by Peter O’Toole, who was Oscar nominated. The clips we see of Alan Swann’s great roles come from O’Toole’s earlier films, Lord Jim and Great Catherine.

Produced by Mel Brooks, who wrote for Sid Caesar (Kaiser, geddit?) in the early years of television, the plot is a fictionalisation of Errol Flynn’s appearance on Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows”. In reality Brooks and Flynn never even met, and the show passed off without incident, but the film is a great alternative reality.

While O’Toole is the heart and soul of the film, the supporting cast play very well indeed, particularly Bologna’s “King” Kaiser. He is an insecure, bullying loudmouth, but he is also rather courageous, standing up to Rojeck physically and refusing to be scared off, and essentially decent and kind-hearted. He’s a rather touching character, and Bologna plays him very well.

Equally memorable are Benjy’s Brooklyn family. They are loud and uncouth (Uncle Morty (Lou Jacobi) wants to know about Swann’s recent ‘paternity rap’ – “Did you schtup her?”) but fundamentally decent people who, for all their faults, love and support each other. They call Swann ‘Al’ (“Mom,” pleads Benjy, “it’s Alan. If I bring Jolson or Capone, it’s Al.”) before settling down to Benjy’s Filipino stepfather’s speciality, ‘Meatloaf Mindanao’, seasoned with parrot meat. As Benjy, Mark Linn-Baker brings a lot of frenetic energy as he tries to come to terms with Swann’s attitude to life, while keeping him safe in order to keep his job, but does fall into the classic trap of American comedy – assuming that shouting your lines somehow makes them funnier.

‘My Favorite Year’ is a real feelgood comedy, which sends you on your way with a golden glow inside. Life isn’t like this, but wouldn’t it be great if it was?

Watch out for Gloria Stuart – ‘old Rose’ from James Cameron’s Titanic – in a cameo as Swann’s dancing partner in the Stork Club.

“Together with his collaborator, (prominent Australian playwright) Stephen Sewell, Ian Pringle has wisely chosen to avoid the restrictive confines of a birth-to-death biography. They have instead fashioned an involving interior drama, focusing on the final four years of Isabelle Eberhardt’s turbulent existence. This is the period when Isabelle (Mathilda May) returns to North Africa, ostensibly to track down a missing right-wing eccentric, the Marquis de Moyes. Eberhardt operates as a kind of free-roving desert correspondent, outraging authorities both with her published accounts exposing the corruption of the French militia, and also with her rebellious behaviour as an independent, self-styled woman in an exclusively male domain.

Isabelle’s adventures in the field embroil her in adventures of the heart. She encounters Slimene (Tcheky Karo), an Arab foot soldier and the charming, enigmatic Major Lyautey (Peter O’Toole). Torn between commitment to others and the impassioned force of her own headstrong will, Isabelle conducts an intense, internal power struggle. Ultimately, external events prove literally overwhelming in a spectacular and moving finale.

Director’s Note: “Isabelle had a prodigious intellect and wanted to be a writer. She was fluent in five languages and became intoxicated with the Occidental. She found in that a way to escape, a way to freedom. The greatest challenge in writing the script was dealing with a life that was so chaotic. It was only very late in the piece that I fully appreciated how melodramatic her life was – almost operatic. So i tried to push the film that way.” – Ian Pringle

Based on the short story “Venus Rising” by George Bradshaw, How to Steal a Million features a rather contrived plot about a wealthy art forger (Academy Award winner Hugh Griffith, Ben Hur) and his beautiful daughter (Hepburn) who are about to be exposed as frauds after they allow one of their fake statues to be displayed in a major art exhibition. In a desperate attempt to save face, Hepburn solicits help from a dashing society burglar (Peter O’Toole, Lawrence of Arabia) to steal the statue before tests can be made to reveal its true origin. The “burglar” isn’t exactly what he appears to be, however, and as they plot their haphazard heist, the two inevitably begin to fall in love.

Audrey Hepburn stars as Nicole Bonnet, the daughter of a very successful art forger named Charles Bonnet (played by Hugh Griffith). His latest project is a replica of a famed statue, which he knows would be scrutinized and inspected if he were to sell it – so he chooses instead to donate the piece to a museum. But when the museum announces that they’re bringing in a specialist to examine the statue, Charles is sure he’ll be found out. Nicole decides that the only way to avoid the situation is to steal the statue back, and enlists the help of suave, self-described “society burglar” Simon Dermott (O’Toole). The two begin plotting the heist and, of course, find themselves falling for each other along the way.

Another comment from IMDb: A charming adventure comedy. It revolves around good-hearted art forgery and the need to set thing right. The basic plot is rather implausible, but it hardly matters. There is a great chemistry between the primary characters and the story is pleasantly devoid of attributes that would prevent the film from being enjoyed by anybody from 10 years-old and up. The blend of mild suspense, gentle comedy and a bit of romance is not too intellectually provocative, but it makes for great fun. It’s a film I can sit down an watch with my teenage daughter, my younger son, my wife and my mother, and everybody has a good time and comes away feeling better than when they sat down.
