In “Die Nordkalotte”, Peter Nestler shows the transition of space in Lapland after Chernobyl nuclear accident while he continues the shots of river and valley from the top of mountains to sea. Deer and other animals in the vast space disappear gradually, and we see them caught to the space with a narrow cage at the end of this film. There’re rich information and physical sense which viewers can’t recognize on all other media. We should reconsider that Straub says “Operai,Contadini” is a challenge to talk-show on television. Although they’re co-productions with television, they support cinema where we support force of stare and concentration in the dark.

Peter Nestler provides a critical view on the industrialization, especially the mining of ore, on the Kola Peninsula, which led to a wide-ranging destruction of forests, lakes and tundra. In addition, the film examines the consequences of industrialization on Lappland’s indigenous people. The traditions and understanding of nature of the few thousand reindeer herding Lapps in the remote northern Russian peninsula and in northern Scandinavia are juxtaposed to the modern world after the Industrial Revolution. Synopsis
The Ruhr, a present heavy with anger: the issue of resistance, of fighting against fascism, of the workers’ movement. There is also the question of the overwhelming rage that can surge up when faced with the reality of defeats, with no consolation or reconciliation. (-cinemadureel.org)

This film is arguably Nestler’s angriest documentary. It is a bitter personal statement about life in the Ruhr region: the fight against fascism, the reality of communism and his own struggle for acceptance in his native Germany. It confronts viewers with a sequence of rigid images that are accompanied by seemingly frozen voices, giving evidence of one big frustration. Nestler makes no compromise. There is only room for wrath in this impressively filmed «rebellion». (-viennale.at)

The city of Marseille, close to the estuary of the Rhône River, has long been recognized as an important transit port for all of Europe. Nestler’s film is set against the backdrop of the industrialization at Fos-sur-Mer, some 32 kilometers northwest of Marseille. It gives an account of the port’s development since the late 1960s. In addition, Fos-sur-Mer recalls the living conditions of some 7.000 laborers working on this industrial site.

Pachamama Unsere Erde (1995)

Pachamama is another fine example of Peter Nestler’s extraordinary documentaries. He takes us on an expedition to Ecuador, to the heart of an ancient Indian culture. Although heavily damaged by the Spanish conquerors, many of the old treasures and, more remarkably, many of the old traditions and customs have survived and are still in practice today. It’s a film of quiet beauty and sadness, but of a sadness that is friendly and not bitter; a film about the cultural wealth of a fascinating country. (Ted Roth, -viennale.at)

Peter Nestler remains one of the most outstanding documentary filmmakers from German post-war cinema. Born in 1937, he created his first short documentaries from 1962 to 1965, including Mülheim/Ruhr (1964), Ödenwaldstetten (1964) and Rheinstrom (1965), which were a series of aesthetically meticulous and politically radical portraits of everyday life and working-class environment in Germany.
Peter Nestler once said, “Ever since I began making films, I have tried to show the very heart of the matter. I did this so spectators would remember and recognize things, and, in order to point out that something needs to be changed, needs to be preserved or must not be forgotten.” This statement emphasizes Nestler’s unconventional approach to filmmaking. His work introduced an entirely new and uncompromising style to German cinema, which was met with a profound lack of understanding by both audiences and critics. Decreasing working opportunities in his native Germany eventually forced Nestler to emigrate to Sweden in 1966, where he began to work with Swedish Television. He created cinematic essays, political travelogues and historical documentaries of a terse but absorbingly poetic style, attempting to capture and comprehend the world through film.

“The themes and the ideological sources of Nestler’s films reflect the attitude of the 1950s. It is a stance that tries to establish a functioning labor policy via anti-fascism and by rejecting anti-communism.“ (Harmut Bitomsky). Despite this remarkable attempt Nestler remained restricted in his working possibilities, and widely undiscovered for a long time.

In recent years Peter Nestler has traveled far to produce a number of feature films such as Pachamama in South America, Die Nordkalotte in Scandinavia and Flucht in France. These exceptional documentaries establish his reputation as one of the finest documentary filmmakers of our time; a director who remains to be discovered over and over again. As critic Jörg Huber remarks: “Nestler is shooting one large film, that will never end – in the same way that its narrator continues to spin his tale. Each single film is a paragraph or a chapter of this ‘book of life’, which endures time and space. What is captured in an image and what survives as an image is kept from falling into oblivion; it never appears entirely strange.” (-viennale.at)

»The Open View – Artists of the Sinti and Roma« presents artists of the Sinti and Roma who shape the trauma of persecution and very personal experiences in their works. They use a wide variety of forms of expression and means, but what they all have in common is an open view.
Peter Nestler succeeds in making this tangible by meeting them without cultural fixations and at eye level. Gitta Martl and her daughter Nicole Sevik read short texts. They commemorate the Sinti and Roma in the Austrian »gypsy detention camp« Weyer.
Ceija Stojka (1933-2013) was an Austrian writer, painter, singer, activist and survivor of the Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz, Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen.
Her paintings are exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. Ceija Stojka created her own forms of expression, shaped memory and trauma into a painted oratorio against forgetting.
Filmmaker Karin Berger accompanied Stojka’s work as a friend and mentor for two and a half decades, a reminiscense of an extraordinary woman. Writer and Roma activist Samuel Mágó, who deals with identity and prejudice in his texts, says: »For my generation, Ceija Stojka is a really great role model«.
In this context, the film scholar Radmila Mladenova makes an excursion to antiziganist clichés in film history since D. W. Griffith, which are contrasted with photographs characterized by an »egalitarian view« in the depiction of Sinti and Roma.
The artist Lita Cabellut spent her childhood in precarious conditions in Aragon, Spain.
At the age of twelve, she was adopted by a Catalan noble family, moved to the Netherlands in 1980, studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and has lived in The Hague ever since. As a painter, she uses a modern fresco technique, creates opera sets and costumes. In recent years, a lot has changed for the better for artists. For example, the Kai Dikhas Gallery and Foundation under the direction of Moritz Pankok offers a continuous forum with more than a hundred exhibitions. Parts of the collection can be seen at this year’s »documenta fifteen«.
Jovan Nicolic tells poetic short stories about his childhood in a Yugoslav family of musicians.
»The Tear« is a tragicomic miniature about the funeral service for his dead father, who is put the saxophone on his lips one last time. The film is framed by excerpts from a concert of the »Roma and Sinti Philharmonic«.
Under the direction of Riccardo M Sahiti, the orchestra performed with performer Iva Bittová, cymbalist László Rácz and violin virtuoso Roby Lakatos at the »Morgenland Festival Osnabrück« in November 2021.
