Synopsis:
In this tale, the scenes are simultaneously clear and labyrinthine.
Four people, the old man, the young woman, the soldier and the player walk around an imaginary topography across continents. They escape from their everyday existence. Each one of them starts out, alone, only to meet up and form a group, which is to move along like an expedition. Suddenly they come across a clearing, a city, a desert, an ocean. They all follow the ardent desire that drove them to leave.
Through their conversations, their discussions, rejoinders, monologues and dreams, they tell the story.
One day, the old man disappears, he who had guided the group. What remains is the search and the dream of finding hem again.

3 AMERICAN LP’S was the first film I did with Peter Handke. It was a film about American music, about three pieces of three LP’s. There was a song by Van Morrison, another by Harvey Mandel, and one of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

It was mainly the music and some shots out of a car, landscapes out of the car window. And it had a little bit of commentary – dialogue between Peter and me about American music and about how American rock music was about emotion and images instead of sounds. That is to say, about a kind of phenomenon, that it was in a way a kind of film music, but without a moving picture.

This documentary explores the life and work of the Austrian novelist, playwright and political activist, Peter Handke. The director managed to meet and stay with Handke in his house in the country side near Paris. Director Corinna Belz also did a portrait on the artist Gerhard Richter.

Viele seiner Buchtitel klingen wie die Titel einer Jukebox und wurden zu Losungen mehrerer Generationen von Lesern: „Publikumsbeschimpfung“, „Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter“, „Wunschloses Unglück“, „Der kurze Brief zum langen Abschied“, „Das Gewicht der Welt“, „Immer noch Sturm“. In den Sechzigern zeigte Peter Handke als einer der ersten, wie das geht: der Schriftsteller als angry young man und Popstar des Literaturbetriebs, kompromisslos in seiner Sprache und der Vielfalt seines Schreibens, Prosa, Theater, Drehbücher, Gedichte, Essays, Übersetzungen. Kaum war er auf den Bestsellerlisten, kehrte er dem Rummel den Rücken. Er ging auf Reisen, und immer nahm er seine Leser mit in den Rhythmus seiner Sprache, in seine langen, schwingenden Sätze.

A woman living in the Paris suburbs struggles with a loveless marriage and apathy toward her family and friends as she spends her days quietly wandering about her house. Austrian playwright and novelist Peter Handke contributed screenplays to a number of films by director Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick). Here (in a film that Wenders produced), he provides both the scenario (adapting his novel of the same name) and direction for this meditative examination of domestic ennui.

R e v i e w
Of the many films by Peter Handke (either alone or with his partner Wim Wenders) this may be the most appealing. It is also not recommended for modern viewers accustomed to Hollywood’s rhythm -it is long, slow paced and even difficult to follow sometimes. I strongly recommend viewers to read the book too, although they may not find too many additional clues there, for Handke’s style is to reflect the character’s actions rather than their thoughts (which, by the way, should be the perfect cinematic approach). Some people have wasted their time especulating about the woman’s reasons to divorce her husband: the french essayist Gilles Lipovetsky even said that her “lack of good reasons” is a sign of modern life’s emptiness. In fact, we can not say she does not have reasons: only we are not allowed to see them on the screen. One might even think that Handke himself did not care to build the woman’s inner thoughts (and if he did, he sure did not share them with us). The movie, and the book, are about communication between us, or at least this is one of its possible readings. Do we really know what is on other people’s mind, even people real close to us? The answer is no: we can only talk of what they tell us, or what we might hint, but how many times had we been completely wrong about somebody? The movie defies the usual assumption of an omniscient camera: the woman would not share her thoughts with the viewers, and this leaves us with a sense of discomfort. We feel compelled to find motivations that are just not there. Just the fact that the movie makes us think about it would be enough to qualify it as a masterpiece. (IMDb user comment)
