The film is made according to a real event. At the end of 1942 and the beginning of 1943, the Bulgarian occupiers intensify the oppression and torture of the civilians in order to prevent the spreading of the Revolution for the liberation of Bitola’s environs. After the treachery of the peasant Dime Paftar, who informed the occupiers of the presence of partisans in the village of Lavci, among whom is the legendary partisan Todor Angelov – the Teacher, for whom a warrant has been issued, the Bulgarian chief of the police staff and the major of the Bulgarian soldiers in Bitola organize a joint action to attack the village. Covered by darkness, the partisans, together with the peasants prepare to leave the village. However the attack starts around the besieged village. After a great and eager fight the partisans succeed in breaking out of the encirclement but the peasants and the Teacher stay in the village. The Teacher is hidden in Josif’s house, in the attic. The Bulgarian police enter the village. All male inhabitants older than 15 are crowded into the middle of the village, while women and children are forbidden to leave the houses. The major and the chief of the police in order to catch the Teacher select 25 peasants and threaten that they will be killed…

Monday or Tuesday (Serbo-Croatian: Ponedjeljak ili utorak) is an acclaimed 1966 Yugoslav drama film directed by Vatroslav Mimica starring Slobodan Dimitrijević. The film’s title is a famous quote from Virginia Woolf’s 1919 work Modern Fiction (and the title of her 1921 short story collection) in which she described her approach to writing: “Examine for a moment an ordinary mind on an ordinary day. The mind receives a myriad impressions—trivial, fantastic, evanescent, or engraved with the sharpness of steel. From all sides they come, an incessant shower of innumerable atoms; and as they fall, as they shape themselves into the life of Monday or Tuesday.”

The film follows a day in the life of a divorced Zagreb journalist Marko Požgaj (played by Dimitrijević), an average modern intellectual who goes about his daily business. Mundane scenes of Požgaj’s day are shown interspersed with flashbacks and fantastic imagery reflecting his inner life. These include his recollections of childhood, his feelings about the present and past, including memories of his first marriage, his current girlfriend Rajka (Jagoda Kaloper) and his father killed in World War II (Pavle Vuisić), as well as his fantasies and hopes about the future.

The film is today regarded as a logical continuation in Mimica’s body of work as it replicates the stream of consciousness concept previously seen in his critically acclaimed 1964 film Prometheus of the Island. The film’s visual structure (based on a collage of scenes set in the past and present mixed with fantastic imagery, which are indicated by changes in picture quality and colour) and the theme of contemporary social alienation (in part resulting from the trauma of War World II) have urged critics to draw comparisons to his animated film The Inspector Is Back! (Inspektor se vratio kući, 1957) and have been called “trademarks of Mimica’s entire body of work”. Andrew James Horton, writing for the film journal Kinoeye wrote in 2001: “Some of the devices now seem a little dated. Changes in image quality and colour are probably less exciting now than they were then, and the intercutting of documentary footage of the concentration camps particularly now has a somewhat heavy-handed and “obvious” feel to it. But the film still exudes the appeal of what the New Wave must have looked like when it first emerged as a trend, with its concentration on ordinary people and charmingly observed street scenes. And its this that makes the film endearing. There’s none of the removed coldness that formal experimentation can bring to a film as an unfortunate by-product.”

Synopsis:

The story is set between the two World wars. The Topalovic family consists of five generations of males, with the youngest one aged 25 and the oldest aged 120. Conflicts break out in the family because the youngest member refuses to carry on the morticians’ trade, which for decades, from generation to generation has been his family’s occupation. The manufacturing of coffins is more and more lucrative, new technologies are introduced, burials are faster and easier, the era of crematoriums is here. But the youngest member of the family, Mirko, is not interested. He believes in a “better, nicer and more honest occupation”. In this belief he is supported and encouraged by his girlfriend Kristina and his best friend Djenka, owner of a small cinema. Kristina’s father Billy Python supplier of coffins to the Topalovic company, demands a larger share in the earnings, i.e. a fair division of work and profit. Thus these two families come into conflict. In the showdown all means are permitted. This is American gangsterism in Balkan style. Greatly disappointed because both his friend and his girlfriend betrayed him, Mirko commits murder. As a murderer, he returns to his family where he is received with open arms as the new leader of the family, aware of his strength and power, a representative of the new generation whose basic moral principle is ruthlessness.

The inhabitants of a small village in a backward area of Macedonia earn their living by sending their men abroad in search of employment. Three young girls, named Elica, Maria and Nikolina live and work as schoolteachers in the village. Each of them try to make sense of their lives, in that situation where it is imposed on them. In the village the greatest problem is the supply of water. Spring water is carried by Marko from the distant mountains Marko is falls in love with the poor girl Kate. The monotonous peasant life is dispelled with the arrival of a group of mining engineers who come to do some research. The one engineer, named Victor is among them and he attracts the schoolteacher Maria’s attention. The return of Trendafil the old man working abroad, Kate’s uncle, is a special event in the village’s life. The destiny of a great number of the inhabitants depends on the wealth of the uncle returned from America. However there is no place for faith and hope as the uncle returns with no earnings at all.
