Turn-of-the-century Naples. Salvatore Ruotolo and his wife are murdered and their bodies are found in different locations. Since the evidence points to a crime by the Neapolitan crime organization, the Camorra, fear and corruption cause serious hindrances to the investigation by police authorities. In charge is a young and courageous judge who, using evidence discovered by chance, tries to reconstruct the story of the double murder. The plot that the judge must unravel is very complicated. Many people are questioned, even those apparently above suspicion. Deciding to get to the bottom of the matter, the judge keeps all the suspects under arrest, causing a backlash of public opinion. But in the face of passive resistance which he finds everywhere, even from his own colleagues and family, he begins to feel discouraged and is about to give up the investigation when a new piece of evidence comes to light. The information causes the death of an innocent man, but it revives in the judge the conscience of his own responsibility. He carries on with the case regardless, even if it means placing under house arrest the entire city.

Il Tricolore sways splendidly under the credits and then over a map of fragmented states circa 1860, a orchestral preamble concluding with a skirmish against an electric cobalt sky. The climax adduces a note of distinctly Fordian sorrow, with Garibaldi placed on reserve by the Piedmontese army and ruminating from the back of a departing boat like Rossellini himself at the mercy of dull critics. Leo (Vittorio De Sica) is young man trying to make a living without any success. Through fortuitous circumstances, he is assigned by the director of a big firm to accompany for one night the daughter of the firm’s accountant, Titi (María Mercader). Leo pretends then to be the son of a tycoon, and takes her in a luxurious restaurant.

“The first directorial work of Cottafavi was born under the sign of a partnership – perhaps not particularly congenial to him – which established itself in that same year, 1943. This was the partnership De Sica-Zavattini, here actor and writer, currently employed as director and writer on I bambini ci guardano. Adapted from the comedy of the same name by Ugo Betti, the script of I nostri sogni has much of the feeling both of the Zavattini poetic, linked to inter-class paradoxes, and of the gallery De Sica style of street people interpreted by Camerini, who are suddenly called to play a featured role in life. (…) The film is uneven, still far from the style which, apart from the genre and production budget, distinguishes the mature cinema of Cottafavi. But the style is already signaled by various elements, involving the care for atmosphere and the descriptive finesse of some existential situations. (…) We breathe an air of Gozzano, of Monsù Travet, more regretful than mocking, as it would be in the Italian-style comedy.
