Plot
Sanem is a working girl sharing a flat with three transvestites in Istanbul. Every day she dreams of a savior who will take her away. One day a young man named Gökhan moves into the neighborhood, and soon Sanem attracts his attention. This will be the beginning of a journey during which both will question each other and their choices in life.

Brief Synopsis
Based on an autobiographical novel, story of the four year exile (1922-26) from his Turkish homeland of early European ecologist Cevat Sakir (1890-1973).

Based on the true story of Cevat Şakir, a Turkish writer who, just after Turkey’s defeat in World War I, fell foul of the authorities when he wrote about deserters from the army. At first sentenced to hang, he was later sent to a distant part of the country to serve a prison sentence and eventually allowed to live in a rented house.

Mavi Sürgün is a fictionalized account of one period of the life of a Turkish journalist who was condemned to exile for an article he wrote in 1925. He turned his punishment into a reward by creating a little paradise in what is today the holiday resort, Bodrum. In fact he is considered by some to be the first ecologist. The film concentrates on this latter aspect of his character and through flashbacks portrays the inner turmoil of a man who is trying to come to terms with his past. The slow pace is somewhat of a drawback, the flashbacks are often confusing and the protagonist is not always very convincing. But the photography of the country side is exceptional Kenan Ormanlar and the short appearance by a very theatrical Hanna Schygulla of Fassbinder fame adds a little spice to the drama.

The title Forty Square Meters of Germany refers to the shabby apartment where 90% of the film takes place. Ozay Fecht stars in this emotionally-charged drama as an impressionable Turkish girl named Turna, who is taken in by the tall tales spun by migrant worker Dursun (played by Yaman Okay), whom she marries and follows to Germany. But the young bride’s hopes for a better life in Germany are abruptly dashed.

Dursun gets a job in a German factory and on his first working day after Turna moves in, he walks out of their apartment and locks the door behind him. The message is clear — good brides do not leave the four walls. Turna spends her time scrubbing, washing clothes, doing dishes, cooking, cleaning, and sometimes staring out the window onto a small courtyard. The occasional smile of a neighbor child or the sounds of other people’s lives are her only contact with Germany. But none of this prepares her for an unexpected jolt waiting just around the corner…
