Synopsis:
One early morning deputy Philippe Dubaye wakes up his old friend Xavier Maréchal with disturbing news: he has just killed Serrano, a racketeer with extant political connections. Serrano kept proofs of Dubaye’s involvement in corrupt dealings and was poised to use them against the deputy. Xavier readily agrees to cover up for his old pal Philippe, but he soon runs into difficulties. Nobody believes Dubaye’s alibi. And everybody — influential personalities, powerful businessmen, dubious go-betweens and the police — wants to get hold of the documents that served to blackmail Dubaye; by all possible means.

Young and beautiful Silvana (Ornella Muti) has reached an impasse in her life after the
death of her lover. She is approached by a friend of the deceased, Gabriele (Philippe
Noiret), who proposes to keep her in luxury at his manor house, as long as she will keep
him company and listen to his stories of past love affairs. Initially, Silvana is not attracted
to the older man, and only reluctantly, and in stages, accepts his strange offer. What
follows is a very different tale of seduction and awakening for Silvana, as Gabriele’s tales
impress themselves upon her, and even in a way enter her own life. As much of the film
rests on the verbal stories that Gabriele tell Silvana, a real understanding and
appreciation of the film is of course not possible (for me personally) without an English
translation of the dialogue. However, Muti and Noiret are wonderful to watch, and the film
as such looks good (as photographed by Luigi Verga).

20 years after the monumental “I mostri” which was a great example of Italian sketch comedy, 3 of the greatest Italian directors ever (Risi, Monicelli, Scola), the best Italian writers ever (Age, Scarpelli), the best Italian actors ever (Tognazzi, Gassmann, Sordi) and one of the most beautiful woman in the world (Ornella Muti) participate to this great tribute. The last sketch (a funeral) is symbolic : the death of the Italian comedy, which made Italy the second country in the world for cinematographic productions during 50’s and 60’s.

This is the original theatrical version, running for 115′, screened in 1977, complete with all the 14 sketches in the following order:

Let’s all take a second to appreciate the company that is Mondo Macabro for releasing this sexy giallo-esque thriller that goes about in a seriously tame Lenzi fashion. An Ideal Place to Kill aka Oasis of Fear has alot going for it from the addicting soundtrack, 70s fashion, sexual tension, close-up nudies and plenty of twists. Two free-spirited hippies sell pornography in order to pay for the finer things in life, eventually caught by the police and ordered out of Italy, the two find themselves hiding out in a large villa with a woman with deadly secrets of her own!

Kept me thoroughly interested and in constant need of knowing what was going to happen next, but let’s be honest the best thing about it is, Ornella Muti, cute as hell.

I dug it, ‘twas beautiful to look at and lots of fun but would have been so much better with more sleaze.
