Considered one of the most significant films of DEFA, the state-run East German film studio, Goya is a monumental 70mm production directed by one of East Germany’s leading directors, Konrad Wolf, who won a Special Jury Prize at the 1971 Moscow International Film Festival for this work which was also nominated for the festival’s Golden Prize. The film is based on a 1951 novel by the German-Jewish exile author Lion Feuchtwanger. Goya is one of ten East German films originally shot in 70mm.

Painter Francisco Goya stood astride the world of the old masters and the world of the modern, painting as he did in the late 18th and early 19th century. Konrad Wolf’s biopic shows the artist (played by Lithuanian actor Donatas Banionis (The Red Tent, Solyaris)) in his later years, grappling with creative issues and multiple women and pondering just how outrageous he can be without having to have a conversation with the Inquisition. He believes in King and Church, yet he is also a Spaniard who dearly loves his people. This contradiction presents him with a dilemma.

Plain of Vojvodina, Serbia, where many Gypsies live. Married to a woman much older than him with whom he has already had many children, Bora is often absent. His job as a feather worker takes him from village to village. On the road, he falls in love with Tissa, a young, vagabond and wild Gypsy on the run. Her brutal and possessive father-in-law Mirta makes a wedding proposal to a young Gypsy, hoping to keep her close to him. But Tissa rejects her young husband and, unbeknownst to everyone, leaves with Bora in the mountains to get married by a monk. But very quickly, Tissa gets bored and runs away again, decided to join Belgrade…

This critically well-received independent German film production was made and first seen in 1970, but did not receive general release until 1971. A group of five scientists have invented a machine which will unravel the whole fabric of time and space but have managed to blot the full memory of their achievement from their minds. They did this to prevent the complete destruction of space-time as we know it. However, they also programmed themselves to remember everything if someone uses the key words “a big grey-blue bird.” Gangsters bent on world domination and a young documentary film-team track down these scientists, each attempting to learn their secrets for completely different reasons.

Synopsis:
Udo Kier is a witch hunter apprentice to Herbert Lom. He believes strongly in his mentor and the ways of the church but loses faith when he catches Lom committing a crime. Kier slowly begins to see for himself that the witch trials are nothing but a scam of the church to rob people of their land, money, and other personal belongings of value and seduce beautiful women.
