Katja Fleming (Lilli Palmer) lives a life like in a golden cage. Her husband is tycoon Robert Fleming (O.E. Hasse) who is accustomed to complimenting his wishes, and treats his wife no better than a presentable accessory. Katja is no longer willing to live in hollow luxury. The former stage actress also wants to have a life of her own, finally realizing and living out her dreams, which she had once given up for the sake of her husband. The fictitious world around her, created by Robert, depresses her more and more and threatens to suffocate her. Robert can not understand Katja’s dissatisfaction and rules like a patriarch. One day, in the guise of writer John Lawrence (Peter van Eyck), Katja’s rescue appears.

Kitty is a musician ‘s daughter ,daddy plays in the fanfare which welcomes the ministers of the foreign affairs who come for an international conference in Geneva .
You do not change a winning team;the Romy Schneider/Karl Boehm partnership proved highly successful in the legendary “Sissi” which became one of the biggest blockbusters in fifties Europa and spawned two sequels (Romy turned down a hefty sum to make a fourth episode) So here they are again, but their numerous fans have got to be patient :it takes 48 minutes before they meet.
“Kitty Und Die Große Welt” is pleasant harmless stuff ,in the tradition of Schneider’s very early roles;she was 16 (and not 18 ,as we are told in this movie)and portrays not an empress but a musician ‘s daughter ,a musician who plays in the fanfare which welcomes the ministers of the foreign affairs who come for an international conference in Geneva .
Kitty is a manicurist who ,by chance ,meets the English minister (“you could be my father”)and becomes a prey to the tabloids ;to protect her ,the politician sends his nephew (Boehm) who,of course ,is going to fall for her. They go on a stroll by the banks of Genova Lake and enjoy cheese fondue (there’s a similar scene in an inn in the second installment of the Sissi Saga).
Meanwhile ,the uncle, who has never a penny in his pocket ,discovers the bistros ,he takes the bus as humble people do ;the best scene takes place on the lake when the boy claims his due and the distinguished English has to row the boat ashore.
This is a simple comedy, but one that might possess considerable appeal for fans of Sissi .For those who like Schneider’s later career, they’d better move on.As for me, I like Romy in any movie. by dbdumonteil

Quote:
When his wife leaves him, a young French actor, François Combe, moves to New York to work for a television company. One evening, he meets an attractive young woman, Kay Larsi, in a bar. She is as lost and unhappy as he is, alone after her friend and flatmate Jessie left her. François and Kay become lovers, initially renting a room in a hotel before moving into François’ apartment. When François finds out that Kay is not only the wife of a diplomat, but also a wealthy countess who ran off with a gigolo, he begins to have doubts about the relationship. Then Kay announces she must return to her home in Mexico to visit her sick daughter…
Although clearly a comparatively minor work when set along side Marcel Carné’s earlier masterpieces, Trois chambres à Manhattan is nonetheless a striking piece of 1960s cinema – a sombre, melancholic study of solitude and yearning set, for the most part, in the forbidding barren streets of New York City. Above all else, the film shows Carné’s willingness and ability to embrace modernity and make a film which is just as relevant and contemporary as anything his rivals, the New Wave directors, were able to come up with. The moody jazz soundtrack at the start of the film reinforces the sense of isolation and pessimism and gives the film its timeless feeling of haunting existentialist gloom.
Unfortunately, after a stunning and evocative start, the film has difficulty developing and soon shifts into a rather ordinary melodrama. This would doubtless have greatly weakened the film if it were not for the compelling performances from Maurice Ronet (who appears to be reprising his role from Louis Malle’s Le Feu Follet) and Annie Girardot (who was awarded the Grand Prize at Venice in 1965 for her role in this film). The film also marks the first screen appearance of Robert de Niro (aged 22) in a brief walk-on part.

Synopsis
In a South American country, a US official, Michael Santore, is kidnapped by left-wing guerrillas. His captors accuse him of being a CIA agent, responsible for training the local police in techniques of torture and anti-sedition. As the guerrillas attempt to extract a confession from Santore, the authorities, headed by an extreme right-wing government, are closing in on them…
Quote:
In a similar vein to Costa-Gavras’ earlier films, Z and L’Aveu, État de siège is a stylishly filmed political thriller making a bold statement about abuse of power by governments in a politically repressed country. Although it is not named as such in the film, Costa-Gavras’ target here is Uruguay (although the film was shot in Chile), and the story is based on the real-life case of a US official, Daniel Mitrione. Not surprisingly, the film won the director few friends in the United States, where the film was viciously condemned for its anti-Americanism and its apparent glorification of assassination.

Quote:
The main reason for the American backlash against the film was probably its (at the time) daring statement about alleged United States intervention in South American politics. Then, it was widely suspected, but not conclusively proven, that the CIA were actively engaged in supporting right-wing dictatorships in South America, to safeguard US interests. Whilst many of the allegations made in Costa-Gavras’ films (this one and his subsequent 1982 film Missing) have been subsequently borne out, US public opinion was not ready to accept the kind of messages coming out of these kinds of films, hence the high-handed and entirely predictable response from American officials.

Quote:
Regarding its overall impact and artistic impression, État de siège is a noteworthy film, which drives home its point rather well. Costa-Gavras makes it disturbingly easy for the audience to side with the left-wing guerrillas, who at least apply some of the principles of democracy, whilst their opponents, the representatives of authority (including self-interested American sponsors), are portrayed as dangerous fascists.

Quote:
This is, however, not a particularly accessible film and many viewers may be put off by its unfocussed, often haphazard narrative (which, typically for Costa-Gavras, relies heavily on flashbacks). As in L’Aveu, Costa-Gavras appears to be far more preoccupied with making his political statement than with taking his audience along with him. Fortunately, his lead actor is (yet again) Yves Montand, whose cool portrayal of the American hostage provides the film with a crucial central point about which the other strands of the film revolve nicely.
