Among those who made interesting women’s films in the 1980s, and in the centre of the controversy about a feminist cinema, was Atıf Yılmaz. “A Divorced Woman” is one of those films about a woman who in the past had no other role but being a pretty ornament and sex object. She discovers her new sexuality with another woman. And adaptation of Necati Cumalı´s story by the same name (note: his play “bir sabah gülerek uyan”), about a woman who frees herself from male-dominated conventions.

In Turkish society the position of a divorced woman is precarious, she´s subject to sexual and economic pressures. She finds solidarity among other women and sexual fulfillment in a new love affair. Most parts of the film were shot in Muğla and Bodrum. Suna (Müjde Ar) and Ayla (Nur Sürer) leave their past behind, including their former men, lovers and husbands, and walk out of the last frame hand in hand. The beautiful scenery of Bodrum is intertwined with liberated physicality.

Yilmaz Arslan directed this Turkish-German-Swiss drama. A woman arrives at an apartment building in a German city to visit her friend Hülya (Yelda Reynaud), only to learn that Hülya has returned to Turkey with her aunt and uncle because of an unspecified illness. There are indications Hülya was kidnapped by her family. Back in Turkey, the unhappy Hülya refuses to speak or eat. At the first chance, she escapes, heading back to Germany without money or identity papers. Beginning the arduous journey, she collapses on the road, is taken care of by peasants, locates her estranged mother, has a run-in with police, and is thrown into a women’s mental institution. Dream sequences are intercut throughout. Shown at the 1998 Venice Film Festival.

Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar (English title: Don’t Let Them Shoot the Kite) is a 1989 Turkish drama film directed by Tunç Başaran. It tells the story of political prisoners in Turkey from the eyes of a child. It is one of the most remembered works in its genre, along with pre-military coup pieces such as Maden.

It won four Golden Orange awards: best film, best actress (Nur Sürer), best screenplay (Feride Çiçekoğlu) and best cinematography (Erdal Kahraman).
