Shunzo (Bengal) and his wife Michi (Masako Motai) run a beloved greengrocer on the outskirts of Tokyo. When Lee, a struggling exchange student from China, visits the shop but is unable to afford the produce, an uneasy relationship sprouts. Begrudgingly, Shunzo agrees to lower his prices. Soon, Lee’s classmates begin frequenting the shop. As Shunzo’s generosity sneaks up on him and strains his family’s welfare, he confronts his role as surrogate father to his newfound Chinese friends.

Shot between May – July of 1989 and addressing the historically charged notion of a Sino-Japanese friendship, this lesser-seen masterpiece from director Nobuhiko Obayashi (House) chronicles the end of a decade marked by the Japanese economic bubble and the brutal close of possibility in China. A delicate elegy to the Chinese students of its time, Beijing Watermelon finds Obayashi at his most modern, channeling the style of Yasujiro Ozu, while his experimental flourishes provide the perfect disruption, inviting viewers to fill in the blanks of history.

An 8-year-old child finds a 6-inch tall samurai. The little boy is having his troubles with contemporary life and the ancient warrior, lost in the 20th century, is looking for a place to die. They consequently strike up a friendship and in the end the boy grows up and the samurai grows young and, like the Tom Thumb of legend, poles himself away in a teacup. Though not much is made of the attendant allegory, lots is made of this bonding of the generations and all the special effects necessary to illustrate the differences in height and age. Some are, indeed, quite marvelous – a friendly cat towering like an elephant, a bad crow looming like a berserk jet, a trip down a sewer with full detail. These, however, no matter how splendid, are there to make us realize the truly marvelous of the everyday. Director Nobuhiko Obayashi is a real fantasist. Through fast cutting, witty detail and extraordinary care, he effortlessly tosses off his prodigious events and turns a kid movie into emotion-packed magic.

Another stunning Tuesday Suspense Theater movie from Obayashi. I love how there is some music playing almost every second of the film. That gives the movie an special feeling of drama and I think of it as another way to telling the viewer like Hey, don’t forget you’re watching a movie!

And the fact that this is a cat monster movie about making a cat monster movie featuring Takeko Irie, also known as the cat monster actress, and her daughter playing a character inspired in herself! I will sure give a rewatch to this after I watch some of Takako Irie’s cat monster movies.
