Two actresses rehearse a play during a week-end in a country house. But one of them digs up a strange thing from earth while walking in the woods. A creature the size of a seal, without any holes nor members. The mass of flesh and skin, covered with hair, breathes loudly. The creature becomes an object of lust for both women. The relationship between the two actresses becomes tense. Both women are desperate to own the thing. This leads to a series of burlesque and violent situations. An intense documentary about the tremendous tension between observation and interpretation. The pilots and gunners of attack helicopters who carry out nighttime missions in war zones make decisions with far-reaching consequences, not only for their targets, but for themselves as well; the fear of making a mistake is ever-present.

During their flights, the soldiers use thermal cameras to observe movement on the ground: anything that gives off heat lights up. From a distance, landscapes, villages, people, and animals become abstract patches of light and dark, lines, surfaces, and contours. Is the figure among them a Taliban fighter with a Kalashnikov or a shepherd with a stick?

Filmmaker Éléonore Weber had access to video recordings of French and American missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. A French helicopter pilot related his often-shocking experiences to her. What begins as a monotone video essay gradually develops a powerful tension, because as viewers we find ourselves in the pilot’s seat. We catch fragments of conversations between crew members; we look, zoom in, interpret, hesitate—and then comes the explosion.

One of the most striking and critically acclaimed French films of the 1990s, Irma Vep offers a witty and insightful comment on film-making in that decade. The film demonstrates not just the precarious nature of an industry which is constantly constrained by time and money, and its susceptibility to personal whims and prejudices, but also provides an eye-opening résumé of the whole film making process. The film was directed by Olivier Assayas, a one-time critic who has since gained a reputation as one of France’s most promising filmmakers.

The naturalistic dialogue and fluid camerawork create the impression of a fly-on-the-wall documentary and at some points it is hard to believe the film was scripted at all. What makes the film entertaining is its raw dark comedy, which is often used to the point of self-mockery – for example, the sequence where Maggie Cheung argues the case for French cinema when her French-speaking colleagues and journalists are doing their utmost to rubbish it. At first glance, Cheung would appear to be a bizarre choice to take the lead in this low-budget French film, but it is the fact that she is so evidently out of place which makes the film work as well as it does. Like the audience watching the film, she is the outsider intruding on a closeted world of artistic sensibilities and petty behind-the-scenes squabbles.

One thing which the film conveys well is the conflict between the notion of an artistic concept, held in the mind of the director, and the practicalities of everyday life which prevent it from being realised. The failure of the faded director Vidal (played to the point of tragic poignancy by a magnificent Jean-Pierre Léaud) stems mainly from the cynicism of the people he has to work with rather than any fault in his artistic processes. This is made evident in the stunning last few minutes of the film, when the rushes of Vidal’s aborted film flash before our eyes in a maelstrom of artistic brilliance.

SYNOPSIS
This sexy and funny story of a fortysomething guy who wants to fall in love with a woman, but shares his bed with twentysomething guy just may open your mind.

Author, filmmaker and NYU film school graduate Ilan Duran Cohen’s second feature, Confusion of Genders, is both explicit and restrained, sexy and sublime, gay and straight, its appeal and theme of a man’s inability to grow up is unquestionable and broad. Pascal Greggory (an award winner for his performance in Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train) plays Alain, a fortyish lawyer who was once an ugly duckling. Now he’s capable of charming anyone and, like a honeybee hovering over a garden of pretty flowers, can’t decide which to sup from first, next, or last. There’s Laurence (Nathalie Richard), a peer at his law firm, whom Alain recently got pregnant and reckons he should marry; Christophe, the frisky, gay younger brother of another ex-girlfriend; the obsessed, incarcerated, but sexy client, Marc; and Marc’s entrancing hairdresser girlfriend, Babette. “The only person he has yet to charm is himself,” Duran Cohen has remarked.

Can Alain make honey by the end? Or just leave behind a lot of empty flowers? A film of dichotomies, confusions, mistakes and desires, Duran Cohen’s hysterical, chaotic feature makes ordering from a menu seem like a breeze. And its performances, from Greggory to Vincent Martinez as Christophe, are wholly magnetic. Make sure to bring a date. Or several.

As much as Olivier Assayas resists having his themes and styles pinned down, one is tempted to put Irma Vep at the center of the French filmmaker’s shape-shifting oeuvre. A virtually ad-libbed project—written, shot, and edited, like Wong’s Chungking Express, in a creative rush between larger productions—it uses a gallery of frazzled characters to crystallize many of Assayas’s obsessions and, casually and boldly, makes the medium itself the most frazzled character of all. Appropriately, the setting is a hectic Parisian movie shoot in which director René Vidal (Jean-Pierre Léaud), once respected but now shaky and befuddled, plans to remake Louis Feuillades’s 1915 serial Les Vampires. Into the imploding production breezes Maggie Cheung, beguilingly playing herself as a humble, easygoing international star not quite sure why she’s been picked to play Irma Vep, the provocative cat-burglar protagonist of the original. René, who chose the Hong Kong actress as his heroine after watching her in a bit of hyperkinetic wire-fu, doesn’t help things: “You must respect the silence,” he instructs her at the studio, before taking a swig from a jumbo Coke bottle.

A jumpy, erudite cinephile, Assayas uses Cheung’s three days in Paris to take stock of cinema—and, by extension, the world—as the century comes to an end. Léaud’s presence as an endearing New Wave memento is just one in a welter of in-jokes, which also includes Lou Castel as an older, schlumpfy version of the director he played in Fassbinder’s Beware of a Holy Whore, and views of dead genres (the silent serial, the politicized tract) that materialize like ghosts from French cinema’s past. Central to Assayas’s meta-analysis is a long, stylized sequence in which Cheung, donning her character’s skintight latex outfit, slinks around her hotel, filches a stranded visitor’s jewels, and hurls them off the roof in the middle of a nocturnal downpour. A dream? An actress getting into character? Practically a mini-movie, the sequence could be read as Cheung enacting for herself the fantasy projected onto her by René, but even that is further complicated by the fact that she’s also enacting a fantasy by and for Assayas, who’d later marry her. Nothing is simple in this comic-acrid portrait of globalized times, where remakes and mélanges extend even into the soundtrack (the too-hip band Luna does a cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s ’60s hit “Bonnie and Clyde,” a French pop tune about Americans).

The post-modern compulsions on display here may bring movies together, but they also keep people apart. Irma Vep is a picture of missed connections and tenuous relationships, most touchingly in the scenes between Cheung and Zoe (Nathalie Richard), her smitten costume designer. “A state of flux” is how Kent Jones described the film’s format, so it’s fitting that, as a glance into the netherworld of moviemaking, it oscillates between the playfulness of Truffaut’s Day for Night and the caustic sadness of Godard’s Passion. Presenting itself as a here-and-now snapshot, its characters argue that American films have “too much decoration, too much money” and that French films have become ossified by out-of-touch intellectualism. Assayas agrees at least partially with both positions, yet his satire of cinematic decline is undercut by a sense of hope supplied by his own film’s élan, and he even gives the last (visual) word to René by closing the film with the fallen auteur’s defiant images filling the screen: An unnerving, Brakhagian barrage of defaced projections. An act of vision or vandalism? Earlier, a scrawled manifesto is seen during the screening of a grainy 1969 relic: “Cinema is not magic. It’s a technique and a science.” But it will survive and continue to enthrall, Assayas argues, as long as there are people willing to scratch its surfaces.
