A portrait of a New York neighborhood, centered around East 77th Street and its immediate surroundings. The film captures the flavor of this area, made up of a white population from the very rich on 5th Avenue to the ordinary citizens as you proceed towards the East River which was known as the Dead End. In 1970 this was a neighborhood in transition, as developers were moving in and changing the landscape. A bicycle shop owner, a rabbi, a butcher, an astrologist, a banker and his family are among the people we meet.

Featuring Harry Partch, Lou Harrison and Terry Riley, Musical Outsiders: An American Legacy addresses the freedom desired by the musicians and their efforts to gain recognition and opportunities while existing outside of the mainstream. When asked about his creative process, Terry Riley offered the following thought, “There’s always an endless frontier in music, because we’re dealing here with a person’s soul, you’re dealing with something that’s very basic, it’s a spiritual element.” (Terry Riley). Together the featured artists offer a deeper understanding of their alternative musical pursuits and how they have affected American culture.

Both his colleagues and critics reject the classification of Stirling as a Postmodernist, believing the term “rogue architect” to fit him better. With no desire to abide by the rules of a specific and timely movement, Stirling creates with a free and explorative hand.

An examination of six of his most significant buildings gives insight to his unique vision: The Salk Institute in La Jolla; the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth; the Center for British Art in New Haven; the library at Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire; the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and the Parliament Buildings of Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The visits to the sites are enhanced with historic footage and sound recordings of Kahn.
