The lively João Grilo and the sly Chicó are poor guys living in the hinterland who cheat a bunch of people in a small Northeast Brazil town. But when they die, they have to be judged by Christ, the Devil and the Virgin Mary, before they are admitted to paradise.

The film is based on one of Brasil’s most important plays of all time, “O Auto da Compadecida” by Ariano Suassuano. The story takes place in the 1920’s, when Brasil was already a republic, but was controlled by Coronelism, a form of feudalism where the rich coffee and sugar cane producers would controll the population, buy votes and make their own rules. Life was miserable, and as a result of this many insurrections occured, like the famous Canudos, a kind of communist community lead by a crazy elder called Antonio Conselheiro, that isoleted themselves, refusing to obey the Coronels and land owners orders. Because of this their whole population of around 20.000 people where massacred by the army, children and woman included. In this scenario, we have the story of João Grilo (or Jack the Cricket) and Chicó, two poor friends that live taking jobs around and making fools of other people, mostly because of Grilo’s smart brain and fast talking mouth. When a certain dog dies, a series of hilarious events take place, reaching their clímax in front of the Gates of Heaven. I don’t want to get into more details, because the story is delicius to see for the first time. But I just want to mention how fantastic this is. Fast-paced humour, great dialogues and a perfect satire of Brazilian life in the 20’s (and as amazing it may seen, even today). Drawning elements from the theatre of Portugal’s Gil Vicente, Cavalary Novels from the middle ages and Renaissance satires, it’s a work of genius. And this adaptation does perfect justice to the original play, featuring great cinemathograpy by argentina’s Felix Monti, and a safe direction by Guel Arraes. The result is so good, the author Ariano himself praised it upon it’s release.
