Synopsis:

With life insurance money flowing in she not only can afford to pay rent, but also loan some cash to her brother who unbeknownst to his mother has taken on a loan from the bank with the house as collateral. The loan was needed as his wife’s aunt’s factory needs an infusion of funds.

Tadashi Imai’s Yoru no Tsuzani was released in English-speaking countries as The Adulteress. Set in 18th century Japan, the story zeroes in on a faithful wife who is driven to distraction by her husband’s lengthy absences. She is also driven into the arms of another man. Given the sexual mores prevalent in feudal Japan, the husband is forgiven his neglect, while the wife is exiled from polite society as an adulteress. The actual villain of the piece is the wife’s lover, depicted as a glib-tongued deceiver. In the end, it is the lover who suffers the most, though no one is spared the tragedy of the situation. More accessible to Western audiences than most of Imai’s films, Yoru no Tsuzani was one of the highlights of the 1958 Brussels Film Festival.

The girl, who is understated, has a boyfriend, but otherwise only ventures out to meet her jailed father. The family is visited by the daughter of a friend from Osaka who has made the journey without informing her parents. That her personality is the opposite of the girl who lives in the house is obvious. At the same time, the wife runs into her own ex and the husband faints at work due to exhaustion. The live-in girl tends to the husband in a way that leaves the latter’s wife concerned.
