Plot:
John, workman and good guy, marries Anna, despite her dubious past. The past returns in the person of a scoundrel who blackmails her. She shoots. Sentenced to ten years. In prison she gives birth to a girl.
Last movie starring A. Noris with M. Camerini, her husband from two years. A quiet melodrama that tilts toward intimism and deepening of the female character.
At the origin there is the drama “Life Begins” by Mary Dougal Axelson, on which in Hollywood had already been based “Life Begins” (1932) with Loretta Young and “A Child Is Born” (1939) with Geraldine Fitzgerald, both produced by Warner.
(Morandini)
It is a first attempt to revive Assia Noris as a dramatic actress, whose name had been tied up along all the thirties to light comedies. Her acting in this film is excellent, but the popularity of the actress was definitely on the decline, so that, after the war, Noris will move away from the screen, except for a few rare appearances.
Not credited in the opening credits appears in this film an eighteen year old Marcello Mastroianni, in one of his first attempts to enter the world of cinema.

In the ancient Greek city of Ithaca, many impatiently await the return of their king Ulysses and his warriors from the Trojan War. Among these, Ulysses’ devoted wife Penelope and his grown son Telemachus. But Ulysses’ return is not eagerly awaited by everyone, especially by his enemies. They openly court Penelope and ask her to give her husband up for dead and re-marry one of the rowdy suitors who have taken up residence in her home since her husband’s departure. However, Penelope clings to her belief that Ulysses will soon return. To appease the aggressive suitors, Penelope promises that she would re-marry as soon as she finishes weaving a large tapestry depicting Ulysses’ deeds of bravery. In secret, she’s unraveling the day’s weaving, thus delaying the tapestry’s completion. Penelope knows that her trick won’t work forever. In Troy, Ulysses and his warriors use the Trojan Horse ruse to conquer the city. In his fervor, Ulysses destroys the Trojans’ temple to Neptune, god of the sea, incurring the ire of the witch Cassandra who curses him to suffer the wrath of Neptune. On the return home to Ithaca, Ulysses’ boat shipwrecks and he’s found unconscious on a Phaeacian island beach by beautiful princess Nausicaa. His long, arduous, treacherous and perilous odyssey begins.

Alessandro Manzoni’s book I Promessi Sposi from 1823 seems to be one of the best kept secrets of the whole Italian literature. While by many considered to be the greatest novel ever written in the Italian language, it doesn’t seem to have a particularly strong reputation abroad. I first heard about it from an Italian friend during a long night of Totò films and beer some months ago, but when doing some googling after watching Camerini’s film during a train trip yesterday, I realized that I actually have a Norwegian translation myself, bought some years back when I spent most of my time going to book sales in Oslo and filling up my parents’ attic with everything I came across.
In other words, JMS’ serious translation work gives us all the chance to get introduced to this great novel, here in Mario Camerini’s version from 1941 (there are several other versions as well). The 1941 film might be a tad academic and lacks the light touch of Camerini’s white telephone comedies of the 30s, but this is all in all very good handicraft from one of the forgotten masters of Italian cinema. Although it has none of the big stars that we associate with the Italian pre-Neo realist film industry, Promessi is a lavish Lux production that never lowers itself to becoming a dull swashbuckler. The Fascist government promoted it as an “official” film at the time after Camerini convinced them that it was “a film that Italy needed to do”. According to the director himself, however, the work is in fact explicitly anti-fascist in the way it portrays the exploitation of the helpless by the powerful.
