A musical film made for the inauguration of Shochiku’s Ofuna Studio, with an all-star cast of the era.

Synopsis: A romantic film about three couples, each in love, set against the backdrop of the business of the Atsumi family, owners of the textile company Atsumi Shokai, and Fujimura, an investor in theatres and railways. Yukio, the eldest son of the Atsumi family, is a scholarly anthropologist who is attracted to Tokiko, the eldest daughter of the Fujimura family, a modern girl with an education, but she is naive.

The Atsumi family’s second son, Tetsuya, studied theatre in Paris, and after returning to Japan, became the director of reviews for the Toyo Theatre, owned by the Fujimura family. Tetsuya becomes friends with Miyoko Tsuda, Tokiko’s sister from her school days and the theatre’s lighting director. However, Tetsuya clashes with Fujimura, the owner of the theatre, who pressures him to cut production costs, and Kawamura, a shady businessman who comes in as manager, and quits the theatre with Miyoko.

On the other hand, Tokiko’s younger brother Shigeru is in love with Kikue, a maid, but their parents find out and Kikue is sent back to her hometown.

This first film by choreographer Pina Bausch reflects her method of working as developed with the Wuppertal Theatre of Dance during the 1973/74 season. The film does not tell a story, but is made up of various scenes put together as a collage with scenes set in different locations, such as the woods and fields around Wuppertal, the city centre, the suspension railway, a carpet shop, a greenhouse and the rehearsal room. The futility of human activity and the search for love make up the film’s central theme set against the strains of a Silician funeral march. Filmed on location in Wuppertal, Germany, between October 1987 and April 1989.

“The Complaint of an Empress” is more like a collection of random images, something like a collage. Most people would find the film boring and pointless, but I, for one, liked it immensely. It’s all too quirky, too weird. Nothing makes sense, and there’s no plot or dialogue. It’s just random images, and sound. I guess it’s comparable to Ron Fricke’s work in a way. The scenes with the woman dressed as a bunny are very memorable. I think they are my favourites.

And this actually made me want to learn how to dance! The choreography is so marvelous, you want to dance just like the actors. So, yes, it’s not your typical motion picture, but I really liked it.
