Emmanuelle is a 1974 French drama film directed by Just Jaeckin. It is the first installment in a series of French softcore pornography films based on the novel Emmanuelle. The film stars Sylvia Kristel in the title role about a woman who takes a trip to Bangkok to enhance her sexual experience. The film was former photographer Just Jaeckin’s debut feature film and was shot on location in Thailand and in France between 1973 and 1974.

Emmanuelle was received negatively by critics on its initial release and with a more mixed reception years later. On its initial release in France, it was one of the highest-grossing French films. Columbia Pictures released both the original version and an English-dubbed version in the United States theatrically,[5] making it the first X-rated film released by the company. The film was popular in Europe, the United States, and Asia and was followed in 1975 by Emmanuelle, The Joys of a Woman. Several other films influenced by Emmanuelle were released including the Italian series Black Emanuelle.

Synopsis:
Emmanuelle is a beautiful young model and lives in Bangkok together with her husband Jean, who’s several years older. She likes him because he’s taught her much, and he likes her because she’s learning so well – and wants to often. Both are very tolerant in matters of extramarital affairs, so he doesn’t mind the young Marie-Ange coming over every so often, although she obviously wants more than talk from his wife. But Emmanuelle is more fascinated by the older Bee, and joins her on a trip into the jungle.

To modern audiences, this interpretation of a segment of Jan Patocki’s The Manuscript Found In Saragossa is the hokiest thing they’ll ever see with over the top acting and its sheer ludicrousness but that’s part of the charm. Vecchiali’s mastery of light and colour work wonders as is his grasp of spontaneity. It is overt in its homoeroticism and there are shades of an incestuous relationship going on but Marika Green’s coquettish bashfulness is later transformed in a dance scene that while it may not have the same razzmatazz as a Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire routine is effective nevertheless.
