In the fictitious island of Ojeda, people lives a dictatorship and the island is a penal colony with ordinary and political prisoners together. When the Governor Mariano Vargas is murdered by a sniper, his idealistic secretary Ramón Vázquez is assigned director of security in charge of the prison. Vázquez is in love with the widow Inés Rojas and they have a love affair. But when the new governor Alejandro Gual Miguel arrives in the island, he wants Inés to be his lover. Further he forces the killer to sign a false confession telling that Vázquez is the responsible for the attempt against the previous governor and blackmails Inés. But Inés is a female fatale that knows the political games and manipulations.

In Mexican Revolution times, a guerrilla general and his troops take the conservative town of Cholula, near by Mexico City. As the revolutionaries mistreat the town’s riches, Armendáriz falls for beautiful and wild Beatriz Peñafiel, the daughter of one of the town’s richest men.

Shot by the great cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, Enamorada stars Maria Félix (chief glory of classic Mexican cinema) as Beatriz, who resists the blandishments of boyish José Juan Reyes (Pedro Armendáriz), the swaggering revolutionary who has seized her hometown to demand its inhabitants contribute towards his cause during the 1910 uprising. Filmed in 1947, Emilio Fernandez’ Hidden River (originally Rio Escondido) was distributed in the U.S. three years later. The matchless Maria Felix stars as Rosaura, an idealistic Mexican schoolteacher who does her best to educate the illiterate Indians in her native land. Rosaura is opposed by several authority figures who have no intention of losing their hold over the Indians, but she finds support in the form of a kindly priest. Director Fernandez’ understanding of and sensitivity towards Mexico’s teeming millions of unfortunates enables Hidden River to rise above its occasional cliches and unsubtleties. The cinematography is by Gabriel Figueroa, who like Emilio Fernandez and Maria Felix is a legendary figure in the Mexican cinema.
