A Matura exam in civics and history takes place in one of Warsaw’s high schools. Students speak about the Polish United Workers’ Party in front of the committee and discuss questions among themselves in the corridor.

A Matura exam in civics and history is underway. High school graduates are examined by the committee. In the corridor, they discuss the questions with other students. Questions about national awareness, personal characteristics of a party member, the party’s leadership role, and the desire to join the Polish United Workers’ Party are really common. The students complain that they cannot say what they really think because they may not pass the exam. During the exam, they discuss the types of democracy, party systems in the world, and the provisions of the constitution of the People’s Republic of Poland. Plenty of the candidates want to study political science or journalism. One ambitious student complains about questions that cannot be answered frankly. An ambitious female student confesses that her parents are really happy with the fact that she wants to join the party, they are sure that they raised her in a proper way. The students are young, friendly and logical, however, their opinions are not adjusted to the difficult socio-political situation of 1979.

Marcel Łoziński’s observational documentary is a portrayal of the youth of the late 1970s, it also presents a more complex phenomenon – the double standard of a citizen who cannot express his thoughts freely. The crux of the film is presented during diction exercises and a performance by a youth choir, the singers ask themselves the following question: “Are we going to create beauty?”. The performance is interrupted by the reading of the list of graduates. The youth and purity of the young and friendly students seem to be exposed to the destructive power of propaganda, the collapse of ideals and the practice of real socialism. The film won the Bronze Hobby-Horse award at the Krakow Film Festival (1981).

Marcel Łoziński’s Jak to się robi / How It’s Done is a provocative vision of the Polish model of democracy as well as being an ironic and at the same time terrifying portrait of Poland’s political stage, based on a three-year observation of an experiment conducted by the Polish political marketing guru Piotr Tymochowicz whose objective was to prove that anyone could be elevated to the summits of power. Like the producer of the famed Big Brother, Tymochowicz set up a casting and selected a dozen people whom he would teach the secrets of psychological influence over ‘masses’. He led them through the meanders of Polish politics for three years with a view to making one of them reach the summit of power. Those who failed the increasingly cynical and Machiavellian tasks dropped out. The one who remained, called Darek, was a true ‘gem’, a boy from the province who said from the very start that he wanted to become a politician purely out of love of power, money and popularity. Łoziński shows how a skillful manipulator can turn a man without qualities into a political animal. The boy Darek tries all sort of ways of making it to the summit: first he says that “his views are rather centre-right, that is leaning towards the party PiS (Law and Justice)”, a moment later he causes turmoil in the young wing of SLD (post-communist left) and finally offers ideological help to “the only leader who has not disgraced himself”, Andrzej Lepper. Supported by Tymochowicz, this natural politician instigates street demonstrations, causes havoc in the backstage of politics, puts to shame the SLD barons and negotiates with chairmen, practising a great ‘semantic abuse’ under the well-known “ignorant masses will buy it” slogan.

“This is one of the few genuine Polish political films made after 1989, ‘political’ meaning ‘irritating’ in this case. A film which no party will like. One in which we watch the power game with the eyes of an external, ironic observer. Everything is both funny and unsavoury. … The aversion to current Polish politics which emanates from Łoziński’s document comes from its utter deprivation of contents, isolation from reality, focus on itself and on the struggle for power in which the notions of left and right are confused and juggled with freely.” (Tadeusz Sobolewski, “Gazeta Wyborcza”)

A “Polityka” weekly journalist Marta Wesolowska and photo-reporter Erazm Ciolek visit Urszula Flis, who runs a country farm. A young woman living on her own, Flis is an untypical villager in that she is interested in culture, corresponds with writers, etc. Lozinski revisits her twenty-four years later, in 1998, in ZEBY NIE BOLALO [SO IT DOESN’T HURT].
