I was stoked to discover that there is one cinematic adaptation of a Hal Ellson novel. Largely forgotten today, Ellson was the premier juvenile delinquency fiction writer of the 40s and 50s. This loose adaptation of Ellson’s Tomboy from legendary classic French filmmaker Marcel Carne certainly captures the spirit of Ellson’s fiction despite transporting the story from NYC to a decaying postwar French inner city. The title of “Wasteland” is appropriate in many manners, not the least of which is the cityscape the teens wander feels abandoned and desolate due to the lower income occupancies. Carne adapts the story of a teen girl leader of a predominantly boy gang with his traditionalist poetic realism style. Given the previous year saw the release of The 400 Blows, this more classical approach must have seemed out of touch with the concurrent French New Wave. Seen today, Carne’s steadfast holding onto the poetic realism aesthetic makes the work even more distinctive and anomalous (even if there is a noticeable element of Kitchen Sink Realism, showing he was not immune to the current filmmaking trends). The film concludes with a heartbreaking tragedy, making this a more convincing and grounded tale of juvenile delinquency than anything produced in the States around the time. Carne’s Wasteland is difficult to find but well worth the effort.

Synopsis:
Recovering from his disastrous experience with the never-completed La Fleur de L’Age, French filmmaker Marcel Carne proved he hadn’t lost his touch with La Marie du Port. Played by Nicole Courcel, the eponymous Marie is the younger sister of Odile (Blanchette Burnoy). Odile in turn is the mistress of been-there-done-that Chatelard (Jean Gabin). Upon meeting Marie, Chatelard’s cynicism melts away. Still, he merely toys with the girl’s affections–at least until he discovers that Odile is carrying on an affair with Marie’s boyfriend. Chatelard stops Marie from committing suicide, and for the first time in his life really means it when he pledges his undying devotion. Like many French films of the era, La Marie du Port was but a shadow of its former self when the American censors got through with it.

Seven years before his first feature-length film “Jenny” ,Carné already displayed the populisme,the command of the picture and the brilliance which would mark his golden era (1936-1946) .With hindsight,it is pity that ,for lack of money,he could not make his final film ,”Mouche” from Guy de Maupassant , which would have taken place down by the Marne ,and which might perhaps have returned him to former glories.

Nogent has remained famous in France thanks to a very popular song about ” the little white whine you drink under the bowers that way of Nogent “.Carné’s short is so dense it’s a wonder he could put so many things in it. The trains heading for the El Dorado ,leaving the offices and its typewriters ;then the place with the swarming crowds :some are swimming,some are fishing,some are rowing.All is masterfully filmed,with an incredible sense of rhythm perhaps inspired by previous experiments by Abel Gance (“La Roue” ).But what Carné likes best ,it’s the Guinguettes where people dance to the tune of an accordion and drink le Petit Vin Blanc.In his last appearance for the cinema,”Carné L’Homme à la Camera” (1985)a documentary by his peer Christian-Jaque ,you can see Carné watch young people dance :he was probably thinking of those magic places “les Guinguettes” which had become a thing of the past.

“Nogent” is like a symphony:its ending is a return to peace and quietness.The last Parisians are leaving ,and as the night is falling,the Marne river keeps on flowing ,waiting for the next Sunday. 9/10
