Synopsis
During the Ming Dynasty, Tsao Sui Yan(Donnie Yen), the power-hungry and ruthless eunuch leader of East Chamber, craves his own kingdom. He intends to destroy the rebelling clans by using a traitorous secretary’s children as bait. Two do-gooders by the name of Chow Wai-On(Tony Leung) and Yau Mo-Yin(Brigitte Lin) save the innocent children from the fiendish clutches of the East Chamber, only to find refuge at the Dragon Inn. Ultimately, the two warring factions – the rebels led by Chow Wai-on and Mo-yan Yau, and the East Chamber group led by Tsao – end up in the rundown Dragon Inn right in the middle of the desert. Jade King(Maggie Cheung), the beautiful owner and proprietor of Dragon Inn, hopes to cash in on the incident. But problems arise when Wai-on, desperate for the quickest route of escape, attempts to marry Jade in hopes of prying her for information about an escape route; and the two clans go head-to-head in a no-holds barred finale battle.

The story follows Li Hung (Maggie Cheung) who obtains a student visa to the US after considerable difficulty. She travels to America to continue her education. Life is hard there, as she makes clear in her letters home to husband Nansan (Tony Leung). He insists that she stay in America for the sake of their infant child. As her situation worsens, Li Hung asks Nansan for a divorce. When he denies her request she severs communication with him. In desperation, Nansan illegally enters the US and arrives in New York to try to find his wife, only to encounter the same brutal realities that his wife had faced. A friendly teenaged Chinese-American hooker who can speak Cantonese helps Nansan as he frantically searches for Li Hung, navigating the many perils of the city.

Maggie Cheung Man-yuk and Cherie Chung Chor-hung play Nancy and So-so, best friends since age 17. Romantic yet unadventurous, Nancy soon settles for a thankless job at a fashion company and enters her mid-20s without ever being in a relationship. Meanwhile, So-so plots aggressively to rise above her humble family background, stopping her education early to work as a nightclub hostess. She then surrounds herself with rich older men, before agreeing to marry one for money.

The pair’s friendship comes under threat when their mutual high school crush, Jia-ming (Shingo Tsurumi, also in 1986’s Immortal Story), re-enters the picture. Nancy is helplessly smitten with Jia-ming, but Jia-ming only has eyes for So-so. However, So-so proceeds with her marriage despite knowing that Jia-ming is her one true love. Meanwhile, the Sino-British negotiations over Hong Kong and the 1987 financial crash bring tragedy to the characters in more ways than one.

Her roles were typically of characters like girl student, rustic maid, factory hand, prostitute, socialite, and authoress. Ruan’s personal life often mirrored those of the tragic characters she portrayed on screen.
The recreation of sets, costumes and inclusion of original footage from films that have survived in which Ruan appeared have combined to produce a high quality and stylish film, giving the viewer a docudrama about an interesting woman from an interesting period of Chinese film history.
