The adopted son of a preacher comes upon a village that is under the thumb of a deranged ex-Confederate officer, who is – among other things – stealing land from the locals with phony land grants.

An itinerant preacher and his wife and daughter rescue a Mexican boy who is the sole survivor of a massacre perpetrated by southern slaveowner. The boy grows up into Lou Castel as the daughter who becomes Barbara Frey, who’s like a sister to him now, wanders off into the moral morass of this film’s depiction of the west to become somewhat like a sex slave in one of the tawdriest saloons ever put on screen. Into this depravity wanders Castel in search of the daughter, his sister, and which leads him to Mark Damon, the evil southerner, who basically owns a town and employs a small army of enforcers, one of whom is a blond Franco Citti who kind of resembles Klaus Kinski. It just gets more twisted as it progresses, with a mesmerizing “drink and shoot” contest between Castel and Damon. It’s the twisted Damon’s idea. This guy has to be seen. He looks like Deracula himself. Riz Ortolani provided a minimal score, a lot of which is single notes on an acoustic guitar with some rhythmic accompaniment, that goes well with everything, especially the bleak desert-like physical environmnet. It’s got everything, racism, sexism, spirituality, some truly imaginative use of guns, and a thread that holds it together.

Wenders explained that the experience of directing this, his second film, was the usual one which occurs with a new director. It is much more difficult and much less successful. One of the biggest problems is that the interior shots were finished first (Normally exteriors are shot first). These were shot at a studio in Cologne. If you notice in the interior shots, the landscape outside the windows does not appear. The windows were covered with a variant of the rice paper you see in traditional Japanese homes. This was done because they did not know what the outside would look like. Care also had to be taken with not showing the environment outside the doors of interior shots. The exteriors which were supposed to resemble Salem, Massachusetts, were shot in Galicia, Spain. The look of the evening shots outdoors utilized the existing day for night techniques of exposure.

There are a few brief shots in which one sees a three-masted ship on the ocean in the background. This was not a real ship but was a small model sized correctly for the shot and hung in front of the lens (called forced perspective). Only one extra building had to be erected in Galicia for the exterior shooting to hide the large gap between buildings.

As far as the actors were concerned, they were from all over Europe and so all of the dialogue had to be looped afterward. Six or seven different languages were being spoken by the actors. The extras which represent the inhabitants of Salem were all Spaniards.

Burned-out, over-the-hill actor Giovanni returns to Bologna for the funeral of his twin, Pippo, a wealthy suicide unlucky in love. The family tells Pippo’s mother it was an accident, but there’s a problem: Vanda, Pippo’s one-time fiancée, won’t grieve and refuses to come to the funeral. At a family dinner, Vanda talks about the note Peppo left. Again the family tries to keep mom in the dark. They assign Giovanni to persuade Vanda to keep up appearances. He sees her unhappy relationship with her father, who suspects her of sleeping with a doctor. Why she sees the doctor, how Giovanni and she deal with their mutual attraction, and his rebirth become the film’s focus.
