The 1937 Thirteenth Chair was the third film version of the 1919 stage melodrama by Bayard Veiller. Dame Mae Whitty dominates the proceedings as Mme. La Grange, a phony mystic who is on hand when a man is killed during one of her seances. The killing takes place in the home of a provincial British Indian governor, and the victim was a blackmailer whom everyone present had good reason to despise. Complicating matters for Mme. La Grange is the fact that one of the suspects, Nell O’Neill (Madge Evans) is her own daughter. Dissatisfied with the manner in which brusque Scotland Yard inspector Marney (Lewis Stone) is investigating the case, La Grange takes matters in her own hands, stage-managing a second seance so that the guilty party will be frightened into a confession. More slickly produced than the 1929 version of Thirteenth Chair, the remake isn’t quite as enjoyable, lacking two vital ingredients: Margaret Wycherly and Bela Lugosi, the earlier version’s Mme. LaGrange and Inspector Marney.

Synopsis:
Greta Garbo is the misunderstood heroine of this silent classic based on the controversial novel THE GREEN HAT by Michael Arlen. Diana Merrick is a free-spirited and wealthy socialite who loses Neville (John Gilbert), her one true love, because of the disapproval of his stubborn father (Hobart Bosworth). Heartbroken, Diana reluctantly weds David (John Mack Brown), a longtime admirer and best friend of her brother, Jeffry (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.).
However, Diana’s reputation and honor are questioned when her unhappy husband takes his own life. Although Diana honorably hides the shameful cause of her husband’s death, she is cast out of high-society London and deemed the unofficial cause of his suicide. Determined to live up to her unseemly reputation, Diana begins a series of meaningless affairs with men across the globe in an “orgy of amorous adventures.” After seven years of globetrotting with wealthy princes and foreign dandies, Diana returns to London and is reunited with Neville in a heartfelt and ultimately tragic reunion.
This silent masterpiece features an all-star cast, including Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who delivers a strong performance as Diana’s tormented and alcoholic brother. Greta Garbo is a luminous onscreen presence, a striking and statuesque figure.

Plot: Lillie Sterling comes with her husband, John, on a business trip to Java, expecting a second honeymoon. On the ship, she witnesses Javanese Prince De Gace mercilessly whipping a servant and shrinks in horror from the sight. When John is befriended by the Prince, who is very attracted to Lillie, she tries to have little to do with him. During a conversation in their room, John is called away to answer a wire, and the Prince steals a kiss in his absence, for which she slaps him. So she is understandably upset when John accepts the Prince’s invitation to stay at his plantation in Java when he promised to arrange a tiger hunt. She tries to dissuade John from going, but John says he always wanted to shoot a tiger and she is being unreasonable. Once at the plantation, John is too busy to pay much attention to Lillie, and when he is away, the Prince tries to seduce her. Lillie flees in tears after another kiss, afraid of her own emotions. Finally, she embraces the Prince when he tries again, after John has left to see other plantations. But he returns early and sees their silhouette against the shade, his first awareness of what was going on. Alerted by the sound of the gate opening, the Prince quickly sends Lillie to her room and substitutes a servant in his arms. But the ploy doesn’t work as John find Lillie’s trinket on the sofa. John suggests tiger hunting at night and goads the Prince into going with him. A tiger is spotted and when the Prince lifts his gun and fires, it becomes apparent John removed the bullets from his gun. Stunned by facing both the tiger and an angry John with a loaded gun, he flees, with the tiger in pursuit. John raises his gun and fires. Written by Arthur Hausner

Quote:,This intelligent drama follows a group of medical scientists as they attempt to find the cause behind the dreaded yellow fever. It is just after the Spanish-American War, and Stone (playing Major Walter Reed) is head of a medical staff stationed in Cuba. Convinced he has found the carrier of yellow fever (nicknamed “yellow jack” by the men), Stone needs five volunteers from the US Army to serve as human guinea pigs. Montgomery heads up the enlisted volunteers, understanding well the unknown dangers of what he is about to undergo. Montgomery is bitten by some mosquitos carrying the yellow fever; three others stay in a “dirty room;” the fifth must sleep in the bed of a dead yellow fever victim. The film wisely concentrates on the ordeals of the five volunteers. This is a story filled with tension and suspense, backed by an underlying humanity. Montgomery (taking the role created on Broadway by James Stewart) is excellent as the lead volunteer, projecting a stoic image as he submits to the unknown. The film is slightly marred by an unneeded romance between Montgomery and camp nurse Bruce. Their scenes together, though well played, seem out of place and detract from the already strong drama. The ensemble is a good one, with Stone, Devine, and Ebsen particular standouts.

The Sidney Howard/Paul de Kruf Broadway play Yellow Jack was transferred to the screen by MGM in 1938. The film is set at the turn of the century, when yellow fever was the Number One killer in Latin America. Army doctors Lewis Stone, Charles Coburn and Stanley Ridges gather in Cuba to attempt to find the cause and cure of the dreaded disease. Five US soldiers–Robert Montgomery, Buddy Ebsen, Alan Curtis, Sam Levene and William Henry–volunteer to expose themselves to yellow fever as a means to test the experimental vaccines. In a very well handled close-up setpiece, the audience discovers long before the medical staff that the humble mosquito is the disease carrier. The “Let me be the first to die” brand of heroics is sometimes hard to take, but otherwise Yellow Jack is inspiring entertainment in the grand old Hollywood tradition.

Plot: Young Raymond Floriot, following in his father Louis Floriot’s professional footsteps, he now France’s attorney general, has just passed the bar exam. Raymond’s first case, appointed to him by the courts, is a murder case. His pitiful and poor Jane Doe client, who refers to herself only as Madame X, admits to killing the scoundrel of a man named Laroque, but won’t disclose why or in turn defend herself in court. Raymond knows nothing of her past, which includes once being a woman of class, married to man of prestige. But that marriage ended because he treated her without love, which resulted in her leaving him for another man, who in turn passed away shortly thereafter. Her first marriage produced a son, who her husband refused to let her see. Her son never knew she was alive, he being told by his father that she died. The consequence of his action left Madame X on a downward path where she never found love. Now, in turn, she hopes her silence will protect the one that she really loves, he who doesn’t even know about her selfless sacrifice.
