Psychomania is a neat little slasher flick that has been unfairly maligned by its relationship to the creators of the genuinely dreadful (though entertaining) Horror of Party Beach. The film is shot in stark black and white, with a look that sometimes anticipates Night of the Living Dead and a trench-coated, gloved killer that pre-dates the giallo genre (Bava’s Blood and Black Lace was a year away). The cast is also fun to watch, with James Farentino, Dick Van Patten, and Sylvia Miles soldiering away in the early years of their careers. Director Hilliard tries to include as many Psycho style camera shots as possible with quick edits and brief glimpses of blood, and there’s even a Hitchcockian scream segueing into train noise! Tenney went on to produce another underappreciated film, Curse of the Living Corpse, the following year.In this Psycho-esque black & white thriller from Del Tenney, Elliott Freeman (Lee Phillips) is a Korean War vet-turned-painter who becomes the prime suspect in the brutal stabbing death of his model, Dolores (Kaye Elhardt). Did Elliott kill her to end their relationship? Or, did her ex-boyfriend, Charlie (James Farentino) murder her out of jealousy? Or, could it have been Professor Melbourne (Day Tuttle), a peeping tom with mysterious ties to the woman? Regardless, it’s up to Elliott’s attorney (Shepperd Strudwick) to clear his name and downplay his reputation as a one-man killing machine. While Detective Parma (Dick Van Patten) chases down the leads, Elliott’s half-sister Lynn (Margot Hartman), arrives to enroll at the local college. She’s quickly befriended by Alice (Lorraine Rogers), a sexy young co-ed intent on seducing Elliott, who spurns her advances. Suddenly, Alice becomes the victim of a vicious stabbing and once again, all eyes turn to Elliott. How can he ever prove his innocence when everyone is against him?

Synopsis:
It’s the pre-WWII era. Peyton Place is a small town in New England, whose leading adult citizens rule the town with their high moral standards, which they try to pass on to their offspring. The adults, especially those that wield power largely through their positions and/or through their wealth, will not tolerate anything they believe morally improper, even if there is a hint of impropriety without comprehensive evidence to back up the hints. As their offspring grow from teenagers to adults, the offspring learn that there is much hypocrisy by the adults lying underneath that façade of proper Christian morals. The offspring begin to rebel in different ways, which is brought to public scrutiny with the arrival into town of an “outsider”, the new young high school principal Michael Rossi, and through a murder trial.
