Following an ad in the paper, Ilze leaves her native village to become an actress. She fails the audition, but her pride won’t let her to return home. Her boyfriend is skeptical about her ambitions, he comes after her to bring her back home. The plot evolves around their relationship as they pretend and lie to each other trying to deal with emotional dissonance.

Synopsis
Kolka is a small fisherman village on the Baltic coast. Being almost thirty but still living with their mothers, three friends spend their days drinking beer, killing time and picking up fights with the neighboring village.
One of them, Andzha, is about to get married. Being busy with “settling his life”, he doesn’t notice that his fiance Simona starts to doubt her feelings. When his elder brother Guido returns from the sea, the brothers now have to adapt again to living under one roof. Meanwhile his marriage plans fail. The brothers overcome their anatgonism when they dicover their illusions about their up-coming marriage and women in general.
Taking the form of the comedy of manners, the films aims to portray life as a series of unrelated events, where protagonists see the quest for romantic love as a source for meaning to the lives.

One of the best-known gems of Latvian cinematography and the most distinctive film by the master director Herz Frank. For ten whole minutes, the camera never leaves the face of a young boy watching a puppet show, and through this child’s soul the viewer experiences the struggle between good and evil by observing the boy’s unmediated emotions, which make him ten minutes older, more experienced and emotionally mature.

As one of the finest examples of the Riga School of Poetic Documentary Cinema, this film is pure movement of the soul. The black-and-white work contains not a single spoken word; only the precise, emotionally evocative soundscape and the observant eye of the cinematographer are at work here. Shot in one take, the length of the film was dictated by the technology of the day – one role of 35mm film was exactly ten minutes long. To create the necessary drama for these ten minutes “cut straight out of life”, director Herz Frank (1926–2013) watched several different puppet shows and used a stopwatch to select the most emotionally saturated excerpt. The technical aspects of the filming also required much creativity on the part of cinematographer Juris Podnieks (1950–1992). Ten Minutes Older is still part of the “obligatory repertoire” at many film schools throughout the world.

Crossroad Street is a small street just 800 metres long on the outskirts of the Latvian capital, Riga. Its various inhabitants, each with his or her own destiny, daily life and relationships with the neighbours, form a microcosm of the country during the time of the Awakening. The genuine interest of the film’s creators in the so-called average person earned a number of international awards, including a European Film Award for best documentary in 1989.

Crossroad Street is the quintessence of the method employed by Latvian documentary film classic Ivars Seleckis (1934). He has been filming Latvian people in cities and in the countryside with the same amount of intense interest since the 1960s, acting as both director and cinematographer. Expressive characters, a sincere but slightly self-deprecating narrator and the warm, sensitive attitude of the film’s creators towards the people in it encourage viewers to empathise and take an interest in the destinies of the characters. The film was followed by New Times on Crossroad Street in 1999 and Capitalism on Crossroad Street in 2013, thus forming a documentary cinema-novel.
