Review by Jonathan Rosenbaum:
It’s been a full quarter of a century, but I still harbor fond memories of a low-budget French comedy called Valparaiso Valparaiso, a first feature starring Alain Cuny and Bernadette Lafont that I saw at Cannes in 1973. A lighthearted satire about the myopia of romantic French revolutionaries, it details an elaborate hoax perpetrated on a befuddled leftist–a character so absorbed in the glory of departing for Chile to fight the good fight as a special agent that he doesn’t even notice the political struggle going on around him on the French docks when he leaves. The film was so marginal that two years passed between its completion and its modest premiere at the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, and you won’t find it mentioned in any of the standard reference books. No, I take that back: Jean-Michel Frodon gives it a third of a sentence in his over-900-page L’Age moderne du Cinema Francais de la Nouvelle Vague a nos jours (1995), linking it with two other films of the early 70s inspired by the French Communist Party and critical of leftists. Valparaiso Valparaiso had the sort of heart and lyricism, however, that lingered in a few post-New Wave movies of that period.

“Blood-red posters featuring portraits of wanted ‘terrorists’ decorated every street wall in occupied France during World War II, and this account of how 23 foreigners working for the Resistance were caught and executed dramatises one of the heroic myths of the Occupation. But Cassenti adopts a radically different perspective from the humanist ‘honesty’ of L’Armée des Ombres or even Lacombe Lucien, and instead attempts a Marxist analysis of the myth and what it means, historically, to re-enact it. As it moves from one level of representation to another with a Brechtian approach to performance, the film occasionally obscures its aims but never fails to challenge the way we receive history in the cinema.” – Time Out Film Guide

The Red Poster, winner of the prestigious Jean Vigo prize in 1976, is a deliciously complex film. Directed by 31-year-old Frank Cassenti, who worked as an assistant to Costa-Gavras on The Confession, the film offers complex emotions and a welcome plethora of intellectual riches, impenetrable as they first appear. Well before the picture ends, you are looking forward to seeing it again.

The Red Poster is striking because it is at once politically and aesthetically satisfying. Though it exploits the current movement in all the arts toward increased self-reflection, epistemological self-questioning, and the insistent unmasking of the art work, Cassenti avoid climbing the tempting ivory tower to “bliss out aesthetically.” Yet, though he obviously sees himself as a political filmmaker, he feels no need to adhere slavishly to a worn-out “realism” nor to conventional narrative structure to get a message across to the mythical masses. There is something for both formalist and activist in this film.” – Film Quarterly, 1977.

filmsdefrance.com wrote:
Better known for his 1996 comedy Irma Vep, Olivier Assayas has won critical acclaim for this film, a controversial and often disturbing portrayal of teenage desperation. The film was originally shown as part of the French television series of films, All the Boys and Girls in Their Time, which featured the work of other notable directors including André Techiné, and Claire Denis.

Although the its uneven pacing and raw feel can make it uncomfortable viewing, the film manages to convey the frustration of teenagers who feel excluded from a world they are unable to conform to. Setting the film in the 1970s is hardly an accident. A decade which is associated with relentless pessimism (fuelled by political and ecological failings) provides the perfect backdrop for a film centred on adolescent ennui and anarchistic impulses.

There are some cinematographically stunning moments – most notably the funereal scene of the morning after the all-night party at the chateau. The film is to be commended on its feel of authenticity, stemming from the inspired camerawork and some fine acting from the two lead actors, Virginie Ledoyen and Cyprien Fouque.

László Szabó is mostly famous as actor : his filmo as an actor is like a best of the so-called french new wave from the early 60s up to now, or something like that…he also directed a very few films himself, in Hungary (his homeland) and in France.

the AMG clerk wrote :

“An enigmatic man, blind in one eye […] is the hit man in this French thriller. The films opens with this man, in dark glasses, walking into a bar and shooting a barkeeper. With the help of an unscrupulous doctor, the gunman has donated one of his eyes to a government official who is sitting in the bar at the time. As the film proceeds, he is shown receiving training in shooting at targets using sound, alone. As the gunman continues his devastating activities, it appears clear that his actions are part of an elaborate conspiracy by high-ranking government officials.”
