Based on the novel The Astronauts by Stanislaw Lem (who also wrote Solaris) and made during the U.S./U.S.S.R. space race set off by the Sputnik launch.

This East German film about corruption in high places, and self-serving party officials, and abuse of power, was withheld from release from its completion in 1965 until 1990, shortly before the Berlin wall went down and the reunification process began.

A young woman’s (Angelika Waller) idyllic world collapses with a bang when her brother is arrested for propagandizing against the Party. She unexpectedly falls in love with a man (Alfred Müller) who turns out to be the judge responsible for her brother’s troubles. Faced with an impossible dilemma the woman begins to see the world around her differently.

In the early 1960s, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was asked his feelings on current cinema. To him Soviet film, once a haven of artistic expression, had become stale through dogma and propaganda. He wanted to bring film into a more artistic, progressive age and, as a result, the DEFA (East Germany’s film association) greenlit a whole slate of films to forge this new path. Khrushchev was soon ousted in favor of Leonid Brezhnev, however, and his hard-line stance ran in strict opposition to his predecessor. His position of regression resulted in the summary banning of a number of films, all left to rot in the vault. They made a particular example of The Rabbit Is Me. Director Kurt Maetzig (Silent Star) had long been a highly respected Socialist, and The Rabbit Is Me was a slap in the face to the government, adding bitter irony to its biting, honest criticism of East German justice.

1933, the bosses of a large German chemical concern pave the way for Hitler’s rise to power: Thus begins the story line of the feature film Der Rat der Götter (The Council of the Gods), which deals with the history of I.G. Farben. The film adheres throughout to the Communist theory of fascism. Hitler is largely unidimensional: a creature of capital. Thus the story continues: While the directors assist Germany’s military buildup, they continue to cultivate their business dealings with the U.S. company Standard Oil in order to have joint control of the world market. Some directors now carve out careers with the Nazis, while the engineer Dr. Scholz, who comes from a working-class family, has nothing but scientific progress in mind. His discoveries in the field of so-called hydrazine research make it possible to develop a new poison gas. Father Karl warns his son of the consequences of this production, but Dr. Scholz refuses to believe what he sees. The chemical corporation delivers crate after crate of the poison to Auschwitz. Not until the war’s end are Scholz’s eyes opened. Now the Allies entrust him with the resumption of civilian production, while the directors and board members are brought before the court in the I.G. Farben Trial in Nuremberg. The trial is a farce, however, as the film seeks to make clear with its satirically exaggerated devices. In the process, not much remains of the true gravity of the Nuremberg prosecutors. In the end, the old elites assume power at the plant once again, assisted by their American friends of old, and start producing explosives for the next war. A powerful explosion shakes the plant and claims numerous victims. This time the workers do not let themselves be deceived. The shot of their demonstration dissolves into newsreel photos of mass concentrations of troops defending the “world peace camp” of the Warsaw Pact against aggression from the West.

This historical-biographical film begins in the first days of November 1918 on the western front. News comes to the soldiers of a revolutionary uprising in Kiel. Young Thälmann, a soldier against his will, would like to join the expanding conflict on the side of his comrades in Hamburg. As the revolution becomes threatened by the betrayal of the right-wing Social Democrats and the splintering of the working class, he nevertheless tries unremittingly to unite the workers. The reactionaries grow ever stronger and the neediness of ordinary people multiplies. In this dire situation, the Hamburg police commissioner would like to block the unloading of a ship full of provisions that were sent from Petrograd as a message of solidarity. But Thälmann prevails in unloading it. The high point and conclusion of the first part of the Thälmann films is established at the Hamburg Uprising in October 1923.

The second part of the Ernst Thaelmann films encompasses the time period between 1930 and Thaelmann’s murder in 1944. It shows Thaelmann’s battle to achieve a united front with all German workers against the National Socialists, his arrest following Hitler’s seizure of power and the eleven years of his incarceration, in which he unwaveringly clings to his beliefs until his death. An attempt to free him on the part of his comrades ends disastrously, and a corrupt offer of freedom from Goering himself receives Thaelmann’s refusal. He must also witness how his brave fellow socialist Aenne Jansen in the women’s prison across from his tragically loses her life during a bombing raid. The second primary character of the film is Aenne’s husband Fiete Jansen, who already proved his loyalty to Thaelmann’s side as a friend and fighter in the first part. As the commander of the Thaelmann Batallion, he fights in Spain on the side of the people and later in the ranks of the Red Army toward a speedy end to the war against fascism.
