Late 16th century, persecuted protestantism and general dissatisfaction with the Catholic Habsburg rule in the Netherlands lead to large-scale plundering and vandalizing of churches, only harshening the Spanish Inquisition, sparkling the Eighty Years War. Flanders, 1568: Italian minstrel Campanelli tells he followed a Dutchman, the robber of a golden chalice, but failed to prevent him being taken -after banging a country-girl- by the men of a rigid farmer Netelneck, who has him tied-up inside a huge shit-container. After Campanelli frees him, the gold stays inside, and the Dutchman is killed, but the minstrel turns to offer the paying audience a happier version. Seven years later, he scares the Dutchman’s posthumous son into bringing him food and convinces the kid he can fly, like his dad, who is on a grand ship, but fails to drag the gold out and is blinded and chased by Netelneck. Fourteen years later, the minstrel returns and tricks Netelneck into diving after the gold himself so he can drawn the bastard, then sets the ‘little Dutchman’ on the road to find his father, who proves a mere thief living in a beached shipwreck. Both join a brigand band, but it ends up arrested by the Spaniards and imprisoned under the authority of Netelneck’s son, who has him thrown in an oubliette forced to scoop water, but Lotte, his only lover ever, notices something she gave him and believes her son, now she’s Netelneck junior’s wife, is the little Dutchman’s…

With very little dialogue, this Dutch film artfully details the declining years of the legendary master artist, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69), who ended his days in near-poverty. In the movie, van Rijn has just moved to Amsterdam and, following the death of his wife, takes to riotous living with easy women and too much drink, spending himself into penury. The filmmakers have taken great care to ensure that what is seen on the screen resembles the lively paintings of the Great Master himself. (Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide)

Plot / Synopsis
A socially inept middle-aged man is confronted with an unexpected guest even more clueless than himself in this comedy. Bob is a film critic from the Netherlands who loves and understands the movies but doesn’t have the same knack with the real world, especially the opposite sex. Bob is deeply infatuated with a woman who works at the popcorn counter of his favorite movie theater, but while she sometimes flirts with him, he’s too nervous to follow through. Bob decides he needs to be more bold if he wants to win his dream girl, but just as he’s gathering his courage to lure her back to his apartment, he suddenly finds himself entertaining an unexpected guest. Duska is an even geekier movie buff Bob met at a film festival in Russia , and he’s decided to take him up on his offer to let him stay at his flat if he’s ever in town. While Duska is cramping the style Bob is trying to develop, the larger problem is that his new houseguest seems to be planning a long-term visit and Bob doesn’t know how to get rid of him.

Review
This movie is about an older film critic (Bob) who lives a lonely life and goes through his daily routine with not much things going on in his life. What becomes apparent from the very beginning of the movie is that Bob is emotionally reserved person, introvert, and as such secure: with no friends or family he has nothing to risk and nothing to lose, but also nothing to gain on a deep, emotional level. Secure in his little world — consisting of his apartment and a nearby cinema — he keeps his daily routine going on for years.

However, things start to change when he becomes attracted to a much younger girl working in the theater. His long-time suppressed emotionality starts to surface and an inner struggle develops. He finally has a chance to find happiness in his life, but on the expense of emotional attachment and vulnerability. The main character’s emotional component is depicted through Bob’s alter ego — Duska — an uninvited visitor who speaks language Bob does not understand and who doesn’t want to leave.

Once it is understood that Duska is not a real person, but a suppressed component of Bob’s personality, all other pieces of the movie fit together perfectly….

After winning top awards in Montreux, Utrecht, and St. Petersburg for THE WAITING ROOM, followed by the Grand Prix at the Mediawave festival in Györ (Hungary) for THE GAS STATION, Jos Stelling completed his Erotic Tales trilogy with THE GALLERY. Stylistically they’re all connected: each is narrated visually without dialogue, each makes merry fun of an embarrassing erotic fantasy in a public place, and each features the same likeable fall-guy – Belgian actor Gene Bervoets – as the hero always ready and willing to strut his manhood like a peacock in heat. In THE GALLERY Gene finds himself the sensual object of a beautiful woman’s desire. So when, suddenly and unexpectedly, she begins to strip for his pleasure … one good turn deserves another … (IMDb)

Jos Stelling (1945) made his debut as a director with Mariken van Nieumeghen in 1974. The film was selected for Cannes in 1975. Since then he has been writing and directing eight feature films. For his short film The Waiting Room (1996) Stelling was awarded a Golden Rose (Press Award) in Montreux, a Golden Gryphon in St. Petersburg as well as his fourth Gouden Kalf (GoldenCalf, the Dutch film award).

Attending some international film festivals can be a painless chore for Dutch director Jos Stelling. When he goes to the Riga Arsenals festival (he’s been there twice), he is greeted on the street by fans and admirers – after all, he had been honored with a retrospective tribute there as far back as 1988. The same goes for St. Petersburg: back in 1997, when his Waiting Room (1995) was awarded both the Golden Gryphon Award and the Public’s Prize, that double-decker recognition had come close on the heels of the Golden Calf at Utrecht and the Prix de Presse at Montreux. Indeed, the world-wide honors showered on The Waiting Room prompted Regina Ziegler to offer Jos Stelling carte blanche for a second Erotic Tale – with an option to go for broke and round the series out to a feature-length trilogy.

Two factors are worth considering when debating the pros and cons of a Jos Stelling Erotic Tale. Primary and foremost, he doesn’t lean on a word of specious dialogue to tell his story. That waiting room at a railway station, for instance, attracts per se a plethora of oddballs, eccentrics, bumpkins, and other bizarre types familiar to the human species, to say nothing of the games of one-upman-ship that enliven and animate this groundling arena. Add to this the presence of Belgian mime actor Eugène Bervoets, and you have the archetype of the bravura peacock macho who will scale a wall or walk off a cliff if necessary to demonstrate his manly wiles with the opposite sex. “O be careful little eyes what you see . . .”
19 October 2001 | by Timothy Damon

This director is simply incredible. I saw Jos Stelling’s film THE POINTSMAN some years ago, and I’m not sure I would have believed a feature length film without the spoken word could be made. But he did it, and it was great! So then, would a shorter film in the same format be easier to make? You might think so. But Mark Twain once remarked (paraphrased) that he could do a 2 hour speech on most any subject with little advance preparation, but to properly do a 15 minute speech might take at least a week to properly prepare. Regardless, he has a wonderful time in a train station, mostly in the waiting room. The camera is mainly on a Casanova of a man as his gaze goes well beyond the personal boundaries of the women he is, . . . well, to put it bluntly, lusting after. It reminded me of the cartoon postcard of a slick-talking guy next to a woman asking her “Do you mind if I undress you with my eyes?” and she is thinking {‘well, I guess it’s better than having you touch me”] Whether or not this guy knows he’s gone beyond the bounds of propriety I’ll leave to your contemplation. But his come-uppance is quite delightful.
