Musician and independent film personality John Lurie hardly seems like the sort of guy who would host a TV show about fishing. But then again, Fishing With John was hardly a typical nature program; Lurie and guests such as Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper, and Matt Dillon take to the water in search of adventure but usually end up with something else altogether. Discover how to catch fish using cheese and a pistol with Jim Jarmusch, let Tom Waits teach you new ways to store your catch, and build an ice fishing shanty with Willem Dafoe in these surreal, dryly witty outdoor escapades. Fishing With John aired in the U.S. on the Independent Film Channel. — Mark Deming

Quote:
John Lurie originally wanted to use his friend Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea for the episode filmed in Costa Rica instead of actor Matt Dillon. But the Japanese producers that financed the series pressured Lurie into using Dillon because he was a bigger name celebrity. According to the audio commentary on the Criterion DVD, Lurie had only met Dillon once or twice before filming which explains why they are not as talkative with each other as Lurie is with the other guests.

Tom Waits was so displeased with his experience filming his episode he didn’t speak to John Lurie for two years afterwards.

“Cole Porter kicked me out of his house once. Said I was a caveman” – Dennis Hopper

Director Jim Jarmusch followed up his brilliant breakout film Stranger Than Paradise with another, equally beloved portrait of loners and misfits in the American landscape. When fate brings together three hapless men—an unemployed disc jockey (Tom Waits), a small-time pimp (John Lurie), and a strong-willed Italian tourist (Roberto Benigni)—in a Louisiana prison, a singular adventure ensues. Described by Jarmusch as a “neo-Beat noir comedy,” Down by Law is part nightmare and part fairy tale, featuring sterling performances and crisp black-and-white cinematography by the esteemed Robby Müller.

Jim Jarmusch’s first full length film “Permanent Vacation”, is a day in the life of a ‘beat-down’ young fellow, interested in Charlie Parker. He wanders the streets of Manhattan, engaging in detached conversations with likes of his girlfriend, strangers, and his mentally feeble mother. Using lots of long takes, the film takes it time wandering, giving it a humerous candid feel. With a soundtrack and cameo by John Lurie playing a ” vibrating bugged-out” versison of ‘Over the Rainbow’ giving it a jadded ‘beat-jazz’ feel.

The film is a day in the life of a young artist, Jean Michel Basquiat, who needs to raise money to reclaim the apartment from which he has been evicted. He wanders the downtown streets carrying a painting he hopes to sell, encountering friends, whose lives (and performances) we peek into. He finally manages to sell his painting to a wealthy female admirer, but he’s paid by check. Low on cash, he spends the evening wandering from club to club, looking for a beautiful girl he had met earlier, so he’ll have a place to spend the night. Downtown 81 not only captures one of the most interesting and lively artists of the twentieth century as he is poised for fame, but it is a slice of life from one of the most exciting periods in American culture, with the emergence of new wave music, new painting, hip hop and graffiti. — Sujit R. Varma
