Prior to the adoption of Confucianism, it was the tradition to abandon one’s parents on a mountainside if they were over 70 years of age. In the ancient kingdom of Goryeo, now modern Korea, a nobleman defies this tradition when he refuses to leave his mother to starve to death.

This film has lost around 20 minutes worth of images in two parts of the surviving print. The first lost scene is assumed to be where Guryong and the deaf bride have sex on the first day of their wedding, and where the deaf bride is kidnapped and raped by the ten brothers. (This assumption could be wrong, since it has been surmised only from the soundtrack). During the two missing scenes, the screen is black (barring any subtitles) while the soundtrack plays normally.

Synopsis
A lowly clerk at an accountant’s office, Yeong-ho (Kim Jin-kyu) is the head of a household that consists of his mother (Noh Jae-shin), who lost her sanity in the war and sporadically cries, ’’Let’s go!’’ his extremely pregnant wife (Moon Jeong-suk), who is suffering from malnutrition; his younger sister (Seo Ae-ja), who has become a prostitute for U.S. soldiers; and his younger brother Cheol-ho (Choi Mu-ryong), who is an unemployed war veteran. Unfortunately, his meager salary is barely enough to support his large family, and he does not even dare to go to the dentist even though he suffers from a toothache. His brother Cheol-ho tries to overcome their desperate reality by robbing a bank, but fails in the attempt. Yeong-ho receives a phone call from the police informing him of his brother’s arrest. When he returns from visitng Cheol-ho at the police station, he hears that his wife has gone into labor. He rushes to the hospital, but by the time he arrives, his wife has already died in childbirth. Driven to despair by the barrage of misfortunes, Yeong-ho leaves the hospital without even seeing his wife’s body. He wanders the streets, and stops by a dentist to have his rotten tooth pulled. Bleeding and in pain from the extraction, Yeong-ho totters into a taxi and mutters listlessly, ’’Let’s go.’’

Notes
’’A film that marks the pinnacle of Korean realist cinema through its bold and unflinching depiction of a dead-end reality’’ (Lee Young-il)
Aimless Bullet is the magnum opus of director Yoo Hyeon-mok, who is a living testament to Korean realist cinema. It has been named the “best Korean film”on numerous lists. Yoo immersed himself in experimenting with Western film language after his debut, but his recognition of the vacuity of formal experimentation that is not underwritten by self-reality made him turn instead to the actualities of Korean society. Aimless Bullet is the result of this new direction in his cinematic exploration. The film represents the wounds left by the Korean War and the impecunious conditions prevailing in post-war society through the plight suffered by the constituents of a single family. Although these characters strive to attain a better life, they are defeated in the battle against reality and lose direction. In particular, Aimless Bullet effectively evokes the social atmosphere of the time by focusing on protagonist Yeong-ho’s helplessness and despair. All Yeong-ho can do in the face of his family’s pain and desperation is to stand by and watch them suffer. Overcome by despondency following his wife’s death, he has his ailing tooth removed and gets into a taxi, crying ’’Let’s go’’ just like his crazy mother. The film’s realistic approach and extraordinary visual expression in capturing the family’s tragic situation shows Yoo Hyeon-mok his future path as an auteur on the one hand, and presents an archetype for Korean realism on the other (Kwon Yong-min). Yoo deftly employs a wide range of techniques, from such Western modernist elements as montage and expressionism to the conventions of the Hollywood gangster film, to portray the dead-end reality facing Yeong-ho and his family. Such distinctions make Aimless Bullet Yoo’s finest work in aesthetic terms as well as in others.

Afterword:
– Although Aimless Bullet opened in theatres on April 13, 1961, it failed to garner a positive response from contemporary audiences. It was later re-released on July 17 of the same year, but was forced to end its theatrical run by the military regime that came to power through the May 16 coup d’etat. What finally brought Aimless Bullet within the public’s purview was its third release in 1963, which was enabled by the film’s submission to the San Francisco International Film Festival.
– With a production budget of 8 million hwan, the film was jointly financed by director Yoo Hyeon-mok, director of cinematography Kim Hak-seong, and lighting director Kim Seong-chun, who was then head of the technological association that produced the film and regarded as a master of cinematic lighting. Other crew members and even its star-studded cast, including Kim Jin-kyu, Choi Mu-ryong, Yoon Il-bong, Moon Jeong-suk, and Kim Hye-Jeong, worked without pay except for a minimal amount for living expenses. Nonetheless, production stretched out over 13 months due to budget shortages.

Director Bio: Yoo Hyeon-mok (1925-2009)
He is the most prominent figure in Korean realist cinema and is considered the heir to director Lee Gyu-hwan’s realistic nationalism. He realistically portrayed Korean society with Aimless Bullet (Obaltan) (1961), which is considered one of the greatest works in Korean cinema. His works include works which show a critical attitude toward society such as The Extra Mortals (Ing-yeo Ingan) (1964) and The Seizure of Life (Insaengcha-ab) (1958), and works which explore themes of God and salvation such as The Martyrs (Sungyoja) (1965) and Son of a Man (Salam-ui adeul) (1980). Aside from those works, he directed works in many genres including comedies, horror films, period films, melodramas, and anticommunist films. His other important works include Kim’s Daughters (Gimyakguk-ui Ttaldeul) (1963), Descendants of Cain (Cain-ui Huye) (1968), Flame (Bulkkoch) (1975) and Rainy Days (Jangma) (1979). Koreanfilm.org

A torrent of sexual obsession, revenge, and betrayal is unleashed under one roof in this venomous melodrama from South Korean master Kim Ki-young. Immensely popular in its home country when it was released, The Housemaid is the thrilling, at times jaw-dropping story of the devastating effect an unstable housemaid has on the domestic cocoon of a bourgeois, morally dubious music teacher, his devoted wife, and their precocious young children. Grim and taut yet perched on the border of the absurd, Kim’s film is an engrossing tale of class warfare and familial disintegration that has been hugely influential on the new generation of South Korean filmmakers.
