Excellent British co-feature that develops briskly and is slightly longer than usual for this sort of film. Despite its length, Montgomery Tully’s crime drama is well adapted from Rupert Croft-Cooke’s novel and contains fine characterizations from a strong cast.
Ernie Peel (Arthur Lovegrove) is a prison bus driver bribed to take a detour en-route to jail so as to enable a gang of crooks to free their boss Bart Rennison (Tom Bowman). Also onboard the bus leaving the court are Martin Lord (Terence Longdon); a loving husband who accidentally killed a man attacking his wife, Cockney petty thief Doug Roberts (Harry Fowler), Sydney Selwyn (Mark Dignam); a bible-bashing missionary charge with sex offences, Major Ronald Grey-Simmons (Alan Wheatley), an embezzling ex-army officer and mentally disturbed murderer Victor Lush (Peter Sallis).
The bus is duly hijacked and driven to an isolated barn. Whilst Rennison makes his getaway, pursued by John Arnatt in his familiar guise of police inspector, the remaining prisoners and guards are locked in the paraffin-soaked barn. To make matters worse, it’s the 5th of November and fireworks are going off all around…

Budgets were so modest on such films that actors were usually asked to supply their own costumes. Terence Longdon, the suave leading man of dozens of low-budget British features, still tells of the grumbling and kerfuffle on the set of Clash By Night when Peter Sallis – cast, incidentally, as a pyromaniac kiddie-fiddler but now best known as the human half of Wallace and Gromit – turned up on the first day of shooting in an unnaturally white rollneck jumper. In the finished film, the jumper is the luminous centre of every shot in which Sallis appears, allowing him to steal the picture from under the noses of his colleagues.

In the Swiss mountain village of Trollenberg climbers are mysteriously disappearing on the mountainside. A nearby observatory detects a cloud on the mountainside which gives off radioactive readings and never moves. One of two English sisters who form a psychic stage act receives a premonition of great danger associated with the mountain. As the cloud starts to move down the mountain, killing people along the way, the astronomers realize they are dealing with an invasion of aliens who have come from a dying world and have selected the mountainside’s cold as the environment which most resembles their home planet.

This was part of Britain’s small but nevertheless effective contribution to the 1950s alien invader genre. Perhaps reflecting Britain’s much more isolationist policy, or merely only the fact that British sf was made on much tighter budgets, the British alien invasions films of the 1950s and 1960s – the most notable examples being The Quatermass Xperiment/The Creeping Unknown (1955) and Village of the Damned (1960) – were much more insidious, more psychologically orientated than their American peers. They contained threats that seemed to cut villages off from the rest of the world and where the threat seemed to come from within the ordered social fabric, as opposed to their American counterparts where the alien invasion was aimed at the whole of society…
