Based on James Baldwin’s novel “If Beale Street Could Talk” (1974), the action is transferred from Harlem to present day working class districts around Marseilles harbour. The movie chronicles the inter-racial love story between white Clem and black Bebe, who was adopted by a white family, along with his sister. They plan to marry but Bebe is in prison accused of raping a Bosnian refugee who, manipulated by a racist white policeman, has disappeared after denouncing him.

“From the director of Marius et Jeannette, this story of two working-class families is a fable with an optimist streak. A young black man, Francois, is wrongly accused of rape by a racist policeman. The story is told in voiceover by his childhood friend, neighbor, and the mother of his future child, Clementine, who is white. The city is Marseilles as in the previous film, symbolic with its churches, prisons and ruins. Except in this film, director Robert Guediguian also ventures outside, taking the story to Sarajevo; two different cities, one devastated by war, the other by a bad economy and unemployment. A la Place du coeur won a Special Jury Prize at the 1998 San Sebastian Film Festival and was also shown at the 1998 Toronto Film Festival and the 1998 Montreal Film Festival.”

From imdb:
7 a.m. Catherine receives a phone call from someone called Kirsch. This untimely call throws her into a great state of agitation, which she takes out on her boyfriend, Raphaël. Upset, in turn, Raphaël fights with his employer and even succeeds in getting himself fired. To excuse himself for his early morning call, Kirsch decides to send Catherine a bouquet of flowers, which, in Catherine’s absence, winds up with her neighbors Alice and Antoine. The bouquet will go from hand to hand, setting off all manner of mistakes, misunderstanding and misinterpretations. The bouquet is the catalyst of a multitude of insignificant events, which reveal the whimsy of our lives today.

Another review:
C’est le bouquet! (2002) (Special Delivery) is a French film co-written and directed by Jeanne Labrune. I saw this film, along with with Labrune’s “Tomorrow is Another Day,” at the 2005 Cinefranco Film Festival in Toronto. (www.cinefranco.com)

Sandrine Kiberlain plays Catherine, a happily married woman who is awakened at 7:00 AM by a telephone call from a former lover. Her husband, Raphaël, (played by Jean-Pierre Darroussin) is naturally curious about this call and the caller. However, Raphaël has his own problems at work, where he’s being aided by his loyal co-worker, who also wouldn’t mind going to bed with him. Characters meet by chance, a bouquet of flowers is passed from apartment to apartment, and people come together and almost come together.

As in “Tomorrow is Another Day,” the film is worth seeing for the glimpse it gives of one segment of Parisian society. It’s certainly a distorted glimpse, but it’s not a boring one.

“…It began with the a couple much like Joseph and Mary, only in a modern French setting. This fable continued for a little longer, until it became revealed that it was a story being read to a near-catatonic woman by an older lady. The younger of the women turns out to be Natasha, a pediatrician amongst the poor in Marseilles, and a political activist. She is the central character, and the rest of the film delves into her story, through flashbacks, and the contradiction that she represents.

Natasha, it turns out, was born of a Christian mother (the lady reading her favourite stories in the belief that they may help her out of her current dumb state), and a communist father. This pairing is symbolised best in her nativity sets, which are both quite elaborate, but which, as a concession to her father, lack the infant Jesus in the manger. Much of Natasha’s life up until the event which provoked her current state of incommunication (shown near the end) involved another doctor called Jeremy, her long-term lover. Jeremy has a family of his own, though these are never shown, and apart from social work and politics, he is Natasha’s true love, even if his own politics seems distinct to hers.

Set closer to the present is another love story, another pairing of contradictions: a teenage girls, born of immigrant parents, and her beau, Rachid, against whom the girl’s father has taken a great disliking.

I won’t go into the many revelations relating to these relationships and their evolution, but it is interesting that the director Guedigian is himself an arch-communist – interesting because this film is far more involved than the political rant one might have expected. The characters are all well-rounded, convincing combinations of idealism and personal weakness. Their complexity is reflected in a combination of religious imagery and social realism. One might even say that through the story of the Nativity a balance is found: the Mother of God does indeed find no welcome at the inn. It is certainly a theme that is returned to several times in the film.

The acting by all concerned is superb. Apparently they have worked a lot together, and they really seem to gel as a unit, while playing their roles with utter conviction. The story progresses smoothly, keeping the viewer hooked for each new revelation about Natasha, her past and her present. There are also some political points well worth chewing upon also, though, consistent with the tone of the film, they are as much matters of simple humanity as they are about politics….”

Synopsis:
A dock worker in Le Havre hears a human sound inside one of the containers in port, that container which left Gabon three weeks ago and which was supposed to arrive in London five days after its departure from Gabon, which didn’t happen. The Le Havre police and French border guards find a still alive group of illegal African immigrants inside. On the sign from one of his elders, a young teen boy among the illegal immigrants manages to escape, news of which hits the local media. The first friendly face that boy, Idrissa, encounters is that of former artist now aged shoeshine Marcel Marx. Marcel decides to help Idrissa by hiding him in his house, news which slowly trickles through his community of friends – most of whom he associates with at his local bar – and neighbors, most who assist Marcel in this task. Marcel goes to great lengths to find out Idrissa’s story, which leads to Marcel’s further task of trying to get Idrissa to London, his original end destination. The one neighbor who wants to turn Idrissa in and the authorities seem to be on to Marcel’s activities, most specifically hard nosed police Inspector Monet, who may have his own private agenda. Through it all, Marcel has on his mind the health of his terminally ill and hospitalized wife Arletty, the terminal aspect being something of which he is unaware and which may in turn eventually kill him as Arletty is his life.
