French director Francois Truffaut’s newest film is a tribute to American film noir. It is based on a 1962 novel by Charles Williams that blends mystery and comedy genres. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays Julien, a real estate agent who finds himself under suspicion for the murder of a friend. When his wife is killed shortly afterwards, Julien goes into hiding.
Barbara (Fanny Ardant), his feisty secretary who secretly loves him despite his penchant for beautiful blondes, volunteers to help clear his name. Donning a trench coat appropriate for the challenge at hand, she sallies forth on her own investigation. She soon discovers confusing clues and meets sinister figures, including a pimp, a movie-house cashier, a priest, and a smooth talking lawyer.

Fanny Ardant, seen in Truffaut’s The Woman Next Door, puts on ample display her sexual allure, energy, and charm. Her character turns out to be a quick-thinking woman able to venture into unknown territory while consistently maintaining her poise. Jean-Louis Trintignant is just right as a self-possessed man in water over his head who is willing to let his “gal Friday” bail him out. The black-and-white photography by Nestor Almendros is classy. Confidentially Yours percolates with just the right mix of good fun and surprises.

Jacques Doniol-Valcroze was a co-founder of Cahiers du Cinema. A respected reviewer and cinéaste but no great shakes as an actor and as a director did not exactly set the world alight!

It is well-nigh impossible however not to like this unassuming, tender and unashamedly romantic opus which he has also written. It is essentially a ‘will they, won’t they’ movie and stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and the director’s future wife Francoise Brion. Individually both actors have charisma and together a distinct ‘chemistry’ which results in fascinating viewing. They represent two sides of the love triangle whilst all we see of the third side is his hand and the back of his head. The emotional soul-searching is balanced by moments of gentle humour.

Editing is by Nadine Marquand, sister of actor Christian and Trintignant’s wife at the time. Plenty of seascapes and surprisingly deserted, sandy beaches captured by cinematographer Christian Matras. The rather saccharine score is what we have come to expect from Michel Legrand but at least no one bursts into song.

As for Jacques Doniol-Valcroze it is indeed ironic that one who promoted the New Wave failed to cause much of a ripple.

Agnès Varda is the coolest lady, the warmest soul, and one of my very favourite artists. It’s a downright blessing to get to spend so much time with her, traveling vicariously, appreciating art and other artists.

Many standout moments, almost too many to mention, like her dancing Second Life with Chris Marker or the potato costume she wore (which doesn’t go unnoticed)! My favourite part, which perhaps illustrates Varda best, is when she herself is being interviewed and is quickly more interested in the interviewer than talking about herself.

Joyfully, there is so much Varda here, in addition to the great many others she visits and brings into the project. Her deep fascination with everyone, (every cat), and everything highlights what a unique personality she is, and From Here to There is a five-episode celebration of that.

A travel doc series in anyone else’s hands, but with Varda, of course, it’s much more profound, exciting, and generous, venturing closer to personal cinema.
