Synopsis:

‘Pietro Ponz lives a happy life in the mountains on the Swiss-Italian border with his mother Lamberta. No one but his mother knows that Pietro is a girl, a deception that Lamberta was forced into by a series of tragedies almost twenty years previously. Not long after her husband Joseph Ponz died, Lamberta also lost her fragile infant son, Pietro. Whilst mourning this double loss, she began an affair with Bolzano, a notorious smuggler. After Bolzano was killed by the customs men, Lamberta gave birth to his child, a little girl that she decided to pass off as her son Pietro, in the hope of securing an inheritance from her husband’s wealthy parents. Now that Pietro is fast coming of age, his tutor and grandmother are adamant that he should be sent to a religious school. Pietro escapes from the school and joins a gang of smugglers…’

Part of the French TV program – Cineartists of Our Time. In 1964, film critic and filmmaker André S. Labarthe, together with Janine Bazin, widow of influential film theorist André Bazin, approached the French television channel ORTF about starting a program that would resemble the long, in-depth interviews with film directors that magazines such as Cahiers du cinéma and Positif regularly published. ORTF gave the green light, and Cinéastes de notre temps (Filmmakers of Our Time) was born. Many of the programs were dedicated to older directors, then in retirement or in the final stages of their careers. On a huge farm in the Vendee, the death of the patriarch leaves behind 3 brothers and a sister. The eldest brother refuses to consider dividing the property. In order to cement his hold on the family, he uses his authority to keep his siblings from marrying… La Ferme du pendu is a well-built, intense rural drama portraying the relentless determination of a man whose attachment to the land becomes a destructive obsession. It also serves as a near-documentary depiction of peasant life between the wars. Dréville keeps a certain distance from his characters and avoids all overblown drama. The cast is remarkable: Charles Vanel brings great intensity to the ensemble, but all the roles are perfectly portrayed. La Ferme du pendu was also the first credited film role for Bourvil, playing a small role as a shopkeeper which still allows him to sing his famous song, “Les Crayons” during the wedding scene.

Nouveau riche

In spite of a very poor rating, this film is really a killer! By far Jean Dreville’s most important film as well as one of the best Charles Vanel’s performances. First intended for Raimu, it seems that Vanel was finally a better choice and anyway if you give this movie a chance, he’s gonna blow your mind. Lord! What an actor!

MOnsieur Lechat is a nouveau riche: he epitomizes the American dream turned French. A self made man, he worked his way up and now he lives in luxury in a desirable mansion where his missus (who tells her daughter that if there are poor people it’s because they are lazy) is ill-at-ease (it’s so huge, I cannot get used to it). He’s completely devoid of compassion, a heart of stone and a desire to push people out of his way, a smug smile every time he puts one of his business’ colleagues down. He feels no remorse when he learns a man committed suicide whereas he could have saved him effortlessly.

“Business is business” is Octave Mirbeau’s play masterfully transferred to the screen. Monsieur Lechat makes all Chabrol’s bourgeois seem nice by comparison.

Monsieur Lechat’s next victim is to be the Marquis de Porcellet (Marquis of Piglet). Now the bourgeois have replaced the nobles at the top, and there is no room there for the ruined aristocrats except… if they let their son marries the wealthy businessman’s daughter. For, like Monsieur Jourdain, in Molière’s “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme”, Monsieur Lechat wants his daughter to be a Marquise (and maybe a duchess). Unlike Jourdain, Lechat is no idiot and he kills two birds with one stone: he enters an obsolete world which retained in the first half of the twentieth century some prestige; and he humiliates a man whose pride, honor, duty and moral values are his reasons to live. But if Mirbeau shows some sympathy for the Marquis (and finally avenges him), he does believe that all those values are doomed and fast becoming things of bygone days.

“Les Affaires Sont les Affaires”, released in the darkest year of the Occupation is almost a desperate work: only the tycoon’s daughter, by breaking off communication with her family ,may mean hope for the future. Her lover is a scientist the discoveries of whom the daddy wanted to take over.

Synopsis:
No one would think that Manuel Ismora, an esteemed society photographer, is an audacious thief and con artist. The newspapers are ?lled with accounts of Ismora’s criminal exploits, which involve the fraudulent sale of a château and the theft of some valuable jewels, but the police are slow in bringing him to justice. Instead, it is Gabriel Dupon, a modest button salesman who bears a remarkable physical resemblance to Imora, who ends up being taken into custody. Positively identi?ed by Imora’s many victims, Dupon is branded a criminal, and even when he is released by the police through lack of evidence, his reputation is in tatters.

Dishonoured, friendless and jobless, the wretched Dupon decides to drown himself in the river, but before he does so a voice calls out to him. The next thing he knows he is sharing a car with Imora, who o?ers him a mutually advantageous business arrangement. By posing as the famous photographer, Dupon will provide Imora with a watertight alibi when he is out indulging in his felonious hobby. Reluctantly, the former salesman agrees to go along with the scheme, but things take an unexpected turn when he falls hopelessly in love with Imora’s beautiful mistress, Coraline…
