Jan Švankmajer at 85 years of age is one of the most prominent artists of European cinema. His work has inspired and guided generations of directors, and his work represents a sharp and merciless exploration of human nature which is entirely unique. When Švankmajer decided to stop filming after Insect (2018), his producer suggested that the creative processes which ferment within their film company Athanor should be preserved on film.

Over three years, the directors followed the life of Jan Švankmajer, elucidating his artistic principles, as well as his collaboration with old friend and producer Jaromír Kallista. The film is also haunted by the memory of Eva Švankmajerová, his wife and creative partner, muse and inseparable other half. Alchemical Furnace is shot on various film formats in combination with found footage. Playful and poetic, candid and with a touch of Czech humour, it is an ode to creation and to companionship.

Jan Daňhel studied editing at FAMU in Prague, where he now lectures. He is a member of the Group of Czech and Slovak Surrealists, a photographer and editor of a number of films, including Švankmajer’s Insect (2018).

Adam Oľha (cameraman, documentary filmmaker and photographer) studied at the Department of Documentary Filmmaking at FAMU. He also collaborated on Švankmajer’s Insect (2018) as a cameraman.

An astonishing array of paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, objects and materials fill room after room – but this is not a museum open to the general public. It is the home of the celebrated artist couple Jan Svankmajer and his late wife Eva, situated in the Czech Republic’s Horni Stankov Castle.

“Why did I make this film? Historical experience tells us that all the kunstkammer that have been created up to these days have been dismantled and sold off or destroyed after the death of their creators For example, the Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor collection and most recently André Breton’s kunstkammer. Yet these are unique documents of the state of the imagination at that time. Official museums cannot replace these collections because they lack personal commitment,” says Jan Švankmajer, explaining the motivation for making his latest film.

Kunstkamera is a walk through the castle and former granary in Horní Staňkov, where Švankmajer’s Kunstkamera is installed. However, it is not a Kunsthistorical film in the true sense of the word, but a film of the magical atmosphere of this collection and the environment in which it is located. The film is not simply a presentation of the exhibits; the artefacts are photographed with the added value of Švankmajer’s imaginative viewpoint in the “ordering of objects and interpretation, and not just verbal interpretation. “The Wunderkabinet that I am attempting to install at the Horní Staňkov castle should include the following range of choices: the art of natural peoples (Africa), l’art brut (especially the work of mediumists), the Archimboldesque principle, alchemy, natural history. Magic and surrealism should be the pins,” adds Jan Švankmajer.

A horror movie testing two approaches to running an insane asylum – absolute freedom versus control and punishment – within the context of a world that combines the worst of both. Jean Berlot, a young man subject to a nightmare of being forced into a straitjacket by two orderlies, is befriended by a marquis. At the marquis’s estate, Jean witnesses a black Mass, buries someone alive, and is invited to try preventive therapy. He’s willing to enter a sanatorium because he believes he can rescue a young woman from there who has told him that the real director and staff of the clinic are locked in the basement. Jean conspires with her to set them free: the horrors have only begun.
