This quirky French film examines a series of events during the German occupation of France and shows what might have happened if one thing had gone differently in each instance. The first story given this treatment concerns the assassination of a German officer by a young member of the Resistance.

Du roman de Paul Guimard qui reprenait son thème favori, l’ironie du sort, Edouard Molinaro a tiré un film fidèle et impressionnant. En deux versions parallèles, l’une en couleur, l’autre en noir et blanc, aussi précises et rigoureuses l’une que l’autre, il nous montre les répercussions que peut avoir, dix ans plus tard sur des vies humaines, le geste dérisoire d’un officier allemand qui ignore tout de sa responsabilité. Les rêves d’Antoine se mêlent à la réalité avec une habileté étourdissante, et le flash-back final accroît encore l’émotion : un certain vertige devant l’incertitude de notre sort. Avec une efficacité mesurée, sans emphase, Molinaro dépeint l’angoisse d’un homme devant la fragilité de son destin et son impuissance à diriger sa vie, qui n’est qu’une suite de hasards. Il nous livre ses réflexions sur la destinée humaine, dérisoire et imprévisible, en prenant soin de nous adresser un clin d’œil qui nous préserve du pessimisme : le philosophe de service nous précise bien que “le hasard, c’est comme les enfants, ça se corrige, mais on n’est jamais tout à fait sûr du résultat…” On pourra lui reprocher d’avoir choisi un sujet de réflexion un peu stérile, et de toucher la sensibilité plus que l’intelligence. Mais son film est très bien mené, délicat sans fadeur, passionnant sans spectaculaire ; il a en outre le mérite d’être servi par des comédiens excellents, de Pierre Clémenti à Jacques Spiesser, en passant par Claude Rich, Pierre Vaneck, Jean Desailly et Marie-Hélène Breillat.

Review:
Four people discuss love and life, learning (and revealing) more about each other than they ever imagined in this intimate drama from director Anne-Marie Mieville. A middle-aged woman (Mieville) and her younger, attractive friend Cathos (Claude Perron) return home from an evening out with elderly Robert (Jean-Luc Godard). After Cathos makes a vain attempt to seduce Robert, the older woman steps out to buy cigarettes. She soon returns, and has brought an attractive young man named Arthur (Jacques Spiesser) along with her. Soon the four are discussing philosophy, literature, and their own intertwined relationships, as Robert and the older woman open up about the failings of their own romance. Some of the realism of Apres La Reconciliation can be attributed to the fact that Mieville and Godard are a long-time couple in real life; this also marks the fourth time they’ve acted together, though the first time was in a film directed solely by Mieville (Godard was a collaborator on the other three films in which they both appeared).

Plot: This brooding, enigmatic story won the 1989 Prix George Sadoul at the Cannes Film Festival, in the category “Un Certain Regard,” which focuses on “smaller” films. In the story, Gerard (Jacques Spiesser) and his wife Annie (Sandrine Bonnaire) have made a nice life for themselves on their farm. That life is disturbed by the arrival of Gerard’s older brother Roland (Jean-François Stévenin) – a brother Annie never knew existed. It gradually becomes clear that both brothers had once negligently set fire to a barn while drunk, inadvertently causing the death of a sleeping wanderer. Roland took all the blame for causing the death, and spent ten years in prison for it. Now he wants Gerard to make those years up to him. Gerard, who up until then had succeeded in putting the incident out of his mind, is now consumed by guilt, and, since he loves both his brother and his wife, doesn’t know what to do about those demands.
