A lovely gesture – a bouquet of roses – from husband to wife becomes the catalyst for a clash of long-repressed emotion in the movie adaptation of the Tony – and Pulitzer Prize-winning stage hit The Subject Was Roses. Martin Sheen, as the son home from war, and Jack Albertson, Academy Award winner as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the distant father, both appeared in the Broadway version, where Albertson had already captured a Tony Award for his powerful work. Patricia Neal plays the third side of the family triangle in a moving performance that earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination and marked her triumphant return to the screen after a debilitating series of strokes.

Synopsis
Potters Bluff, Rhode Island. may seem to be a sleepy little town. At least for the casual visitor and the local sheriff, Daniel Gillis. However, all of a sudden, there are a lot of strange murders where strangers or people passing through are killed by mobs of townspeople. Only Sheriff Gillis has no clue to what’s going on. Fortunately, the town has an excellent undertaker, William G. Dobbs, who is happy to take care of this sudden death-wave which is good for his business. – imdb

With a great crew, and heaps of fine spooky atmosphere, Dead & Buried is in a class all it’s own. The film has a few scares and some gore, but what makes the film so special is the fact that it just exudes terror from nearly start to finish. Best of all, Dead & Buried is never cheesy. I wouldn’t necessarily rank it as one of the greatest horror films of all time, but it certainly ranks up there as one of the true greats – if that makes any sense. In any event, if you have yet to discover the joys of Dead & Buried and claim yourself to be a true fan of horror, you owe it to yourself to give this disc a once over.
