Sinopsis

Sicilia, 1865. Dos campesinos, Giusseppe Gramigna (Gian Maria Volonté) y su padre, engañados por el barón Nardò (apoyados por varios mediadores y el notario) son obligados a dejar su casa, que el barón alquila a Assunta, a su hija Gemma (Stefania Sandrelli) y a su novio (al que no quiere) Ramarro, que es empleado del barón.

Decidido a vengarse, Gramigna empieza a matar a los mediadores cómplices de Nardò. Huyendo de un escuadrón de la caballería piamontesa acaba refugiándose en su casa, en la que se encuentra con Gemma. Días más tarde Gramigna vuelve a su casa y le prende fuego. Gemma (sin saberlo Gramigna) para escapar de su novio le sigue en su huida, mientras su madre y su novio creen que ha sido Gramigna quién la ha raptado.
