It’s a pleasantly run mystery, about on par with some of the better American B series. The well known performers include Kazuo Hasegawa, Ureo Egawa (as the murder victim) and Reizaburô Yamamoto. I was interested in the question of whether this can be considered a historical mystery, a sub-genere that arguably had its roots in the Chinese ‘Judge Dee’ novels of the late 800s. However, except for some costuming and the means of murder — arrows — I think it’s pretty much a standard mystery with a hotel setting.

I’d still like to see more of Miss Takamine as a detective.
