THE SCREEN IN REVIEW; ‘ The Gay Sisters,’ Featuring Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Donald Crisp, at Strand
T. S.
Published: August 15, 1942
The New York Times

What a long, gray and pretentious film “The Gay Sisters” is! Another pointlessly caustic inquiry into the lives of the eccentric off-spring of a once grand family, the new film at the Strand not once offers the slightest reason to warrant the telling of its involved and trivial story. “We Gaylords are a queer lot,” says Barbara Stanwyck as the hard-hearted sister who brings the trio to ruin and then in the last reel quite inexplicably relents. That statement may serve as the nub of a theme which is expanded, repeated and proven for no less than 101 tortured minutes. If the screen must be visited by such a weird family group, not to mention the assorted neurotics entangled with it, let us at least have just and reasonable cause. Simply to prove that life produces a singularly large crop of disagreeable people is hardly enough.

Actually the author is playing at drama with the dice loaded in favor of a dour point of view. Aside from a brace of barristers who behave with decent decorum, hardly a character on the roster acts on normal impulse. Fiona with her tyrannical pride has contested a charitable clause in her father’s will for two decades with a man, who, it finally appears, is her husband and father of her child as the result of a sordid encounter. Evelyn marries an English baron but returns to allow her ungovernably promiscuous romantic impulses to alienate temporarily the affection of an “unhappy” modern painter for her younger sister, Susanna, who is nearly as hysterical after her own fashion.

And out of a story nearly as scrambled as the psyches of its assorted characters, George Brent, as the husband, seems mighty daft too. After long years of legal wrangling, after being paid off for a marriage he sincerely entered, after endless diatribe and hatred against him, he still loves Fiona with all the ardor of a spring buck at the finale. Certainly the rapprochement of the “lovers” is one of the more gruesome happy endings devised. “This room stinks like apple blossoms,” says Fiona as they embrace, thus causing considerable hilarity in the Strand balcony.

No, “The Gay Sisters” are neither significant in their viciousness, nor acute in their mockery of themselves. They are simply a bad lot and dull as well. Of the cast, Miss Stanwyck brings bite to her role, but flinches, as well she may, in the “big moments.” Geraldine Fitzgerald and Nancy Coleman are caricatures and Gig Young and George Brent are simply colorless and incomprehensible. All of them seem to be feeling their way around in the gloom.

While working as a counselor at a summer camp, college-student Marjorie Morgenstern falls for 32-year-old Noel Airman, a would-be dramatist working at a nearby summer theater. Like Marjorie, he is an upper-middle-class New York Jew (born ‘Ehrman’), but has fallen away from his roots, and Marjorie’s parents object among other things to his lack of a suitable profession, such as medicine or law. Noel himself warns Marjorie repeatedly that she’s much too naive and conventional for him, but they nonetheless fall in love. As they pursue an on-again-off-again relationship, Marjorie completes her studies at Hunter College, and works to establish an acting career, while Noel first leaves the theater for a job with an advertising agency, but later completes a musical he’d started writing before he and Marjorie had first met. Meanwhile, their relationship deepens (though, consistent with ’50s Hollywood mores, the more full-fledged sexuality in their relationship is never explicitly communicated). They plan to marry, but after the musical’s critical failure on Broadway, Noel runs away. Marjorie finally tracks him down at the summer theater where they first met–and, realizing that this is probably where he belongs, finally gives up on the relationship. Helping her to move on with her life is Wally, once Noel’s assistant, now a very successful Broadway playwright, and all along, Marjorie’s unrequited lover.

Brief Synopsis:
A woman tries to protect her refugee husband from her rich and powerful ex-lover.

Quote:
Deception is an operatic rehash of the 1929 film Jealousy. Music teacher Bette Davis–who evidently has a large student pool, judging by the size of her penthouse apartment–is reunited with her cellist lover Paul Henreid, whom she believed to have been killed in the war. Henreid wants to marry Davis, but he is unaware that she has, for the past several years, been the “protege” of composer Claude Rains. Rains agrees to keep quiet about his affair with Davis, but takes sadistic delight in tormenting the woman and working behind the scenes to sabotage Henreid’s career. When Rains tells Bette of his plans to publicly humiliate Henreid, she shoots her ex-lover dead. Henreid agrees to stand by Davis no matter what is in store for her. Director Irving Rapper had originally wanted to treat the hoary plot twists of Deception comically, with the three principals walking off together at the end with a “what the hell?” attitude. He was tersely told to stick to the script; after all, people didn’t pay to see Bette Davis but to see her suffer. Like the 1929 version of Jealousy, Deception was based on a play by Louis Verneuil. — Hal Erickson

Plot:
He was a riverboat pilot, reporter, penniless prospector, Civil War dropout, would-be entrepreneur, loving family man, world traveler, pomposity burster and raconteur. It turns out the man who created adventures for Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and a Connecticut Yankee led a mighty adventurous life himself. “Truth is a very valuable thing,” says Fredric March’s Mark Twain. “I believe we should be economical with it.” And that sets the tone for what follows: a lovingly crafted Hollywoodized biopic tracing the immortal humorist’s life from Hannibal boyhood to Big River exploits to global literary lion and more. Riverboat’s a-comin’, hop aboard – with Tom, Huck, Jim and above all, Samuel Langhorne Clemens. From Warner Brothers!
